Around South Jersey, pearly everyone knew exactly who you were talking about with that one word. It was Maria Barnaby Greenwald, who yesterday was remembered during an emotional two-hour funeral Mass at St. Pius Roman Catholic Church in Cherry Hill. Greenwald, 54, the former mayor of Cherry Hill, died Wednesday in a one-car accident. She was on her way to the funeral of another Democratic leader, State Sen.

Walter Rand, when her car hit a tree just two-tenths of a mile from her home. Mourners, among them a who's who of Democratic political leaders in New Jersey, began arriving before 9 a.m. to pay their last respects to the first woman elected to countywide office. Former Gov. Jim Florio was there, along with U.S.

Sen. Frank Lauten-berg and U.S. Rep. Robert E. Andrews.

State Sen. John Adler and newly elected Sheriff Michael W. McLaughlin also attended. A few Republican office-holders former Freeholder Joe Coiyio, for one attended, but it was a day to celebrate Friends of Maria, and that would most certainly be the Democrats. "God put Maria among us so we could snatch a little warmth among all the misery," said Lewis Katz, a longtime friend and political mentor. "When she looked you in the eyes, you thought you were the only person in the universe." His eulogy was one of a half dozen speeches memorializing Greenwald. Andrews addressed his commentary to Francesca. "She was one of those people who never apologized for getting a tear in her eyes when the national anthem was played at one of those mundane meetings," Andrews told Green- Maria speaking to the AFL-CIO, Maria celebrating McLaughlin's win at Democratic headquarters, Maria pinning a flower to Florio's lapel. So many people showed up for the funeral that the pews were filled way before the 11 a.m.

service began. Dozens of people lined the back wall of the chapel and stood throughout the service. A slow, steady procession of mourners passed by Greenwald's open casket, which was filled with flowers and pink roses. Cherry Hill police officers and Camden County sheriff's deputies stood guard at both ends of the casket. Inside, a single piece of pink construction paper was covered with wald's granddaughter, who was surrounded by rows of family members.

It was a day filled with almost constant displays of emotion, and at times loud wails echoed through the church. Just before Greenwald's casket was closed, Floyd Greenwald, her husband, bent 'down and kissed her. Friday night, an estimated 5,000 mourners attended a public viewing at the church. Officials said the line stretched for blocks. After yesterday's Mass, hundreds followed a procession led by a fire engine to the Calvary Cemetery, where Greenwald will be entombed in the mausoleum.

"The question is not what we will do without Maria," said Louis Ma-gazzu, one of her cousins, "but what we would have done without Maria over the last 50 years."
