West Virginia, 17-12. Next: vs. Syracuse, Sat. Standings By Joe Jtiliann INQUIKKK STAFF WRITER After being kept in the dark for 2V2 hours along with teammates, opponents, coaches and 12,118 spectators, Tom McGarrity finally heard that Penn's chances of grabbing a share of the Ivy League championship had evaporated. "I was lined up for a punt when I heard the score, and the guy next to me started cursing," McGarrity, the Quakers' defensive end, recalled of the public-address announcement in the fourth quarter that Princeton had tied Dartmouth to win the Ivy title.

"I said to him, 'Who cares? We're having fun out here. Let's It was my last time on a football field. I didn't care what Princeton did. I wanted to win." Thanks to McGarrity and a number of his senior classmates, such as Miles Macik, Felix Rouse and Dana Lyons, the Quakers did, ending their 1995 season on a positive note with a 37-18 victory over Cornell under gray skies at Franklin Field. Penn and Dartmouth needed victories to throw the Ivy League into a four-way tie for the title.

However, at the request of Penn's athletic administrators, and with the blessing of coach Al Bagnoli, no Dartmouth-Princeton scores were announced until that game had ended. A few Quakers cared. "My dad was listening to the scores on his headphones in the stands, and I would check on him periodically," quarterback Mark DeRosa said. For the most part, though, the Quakers (7-3 overall, 5-2 Ivy) did a terrific job of keeping their minds on Cornell. DeRosa threw touchdown passes to Macik and Rouse and ran for a score himself.

Jasen Scott scored twice on short runs. The Penn defense forced six turnovers, leading to 21 points, and held the Big Red (6-4, 5-2) to their second-lowest point total of the year. "It was something that was on the back burner," Bagnoli said of Penn's title chance. "We certainly would have liked it to work out, but the only thing we could focus on was Cornell. They're a good team.

We wanted to win and let Dartmouth and Princeton battle it out. Give Princeton credit." "There was a lot of emotion out there," said Macik, whose seven catches gave him an even 200 for his brilliant career. The game turned early in the second quarter, when a pair of fumble recoveries by the Quakers led to two touchdowns in 13 seconds. Down 7-0 on Scott's first TD set up on a 45-yard DeRosa-to-Macik connection off a flea flicker the Big Red marched right back and began the second period with a third-and-goal from the 2. But Chad Levitt was popped, the football came loose, and McGarrity, an Archbishop Ryan grad, scooped it up and rambled 66 yards to the Cornell 29.

Scott carried three straight times, for 1, 27 and the final yard for the TD. Deon Harris then fumbled the kickoff, and Ron Heller recovered for the Quakers at the Cornell 31. After the Owls lost 2 yards on a running play, Burris hit split end Kenyatta Carter with a 16-yard touchdown pass.

With 7:29 left in the half, the Owls went up 14-6 when Burris connected the left sideline, and the 6-foot-4 wideout gathered it in for the score and a 21-0 lead. The Big Red scored the next 10 points, but the Quakers punched over one more TD before the first half ended. The star was Rouse, i a wide receiver involved in one of the strangest sequences of the season. On second down from the Cornell 38, Rouse was open on a post pattern, but dropped a sure touchdown pass at the goal line. Two plays later, from the same spot and with 11 seconds to play, DeRosa hit Rouse on a slant pass at the 20.

Rouse cut back and sprinted away from two defenders for the TD as the clock showed "That's one of the worst feelings I've ever had in my life," Rouse said of the drop. "I don't know what happened. On the touchdown, I was so excited to have a chance to get it back." ir "That was a backbreaker," Cornell coach Jim Hofher said. yy The Quakers added to their lead jn the second half, on Jeremiah Great-house's 34-yard field goal and a 6-yard run by DeRosa. The TD was set up by Lyons' interception and return to the Big Red 8.

The defense, meanwhile, forced three more turnovers and kept Cornell's offense in check. Levitt, a Cheltenham High graduate who leads the league in rushing, gained 113 yards, but only 22 after half time. The win enabled the Quakers to tie Cornell for second place in the league; the Penn seniors finished with a 26-3 career record and two championship rings. Rutgers would take a 15-14 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter on a 17-yard field goal by Joe Ku-cowski, who replaced Mike-Mayer after the Knights' regular kicker had missed badly earlier from 44 yards. When Temple took possession again, Culbreath put victory in sight with his touchdown run. But the Owls couldn't make it stand up. Burris' six completions went for 121 yards, giving him a school-record 5,411 for his career.

But Temple was outgained 460 yards to 283 and managed just 11 first downs. "This could have been a win for us, but we lost," Temple coach Ron Dick-erson said, sounding despondent. "I think I owe an apology to our fans, our alumni and administration -because we lost this game as coaches. I told the kids we'd win five games this year, and I believed that. My job is to get the kids to believe." Presley gained 35 yards by Kevin Williams, who was making a rare start at cornerback. Williams stepped in front of Burris' receiver on a quick out pattern, caught the ball and raced down the sideline untouched. Nick Mike-Mayer missed the extra point, but Temple was in a 6-0 hole right away.

The Owls came back to take a 7-6 1 -r the last seven minutes after a 42-yard run by tailback Eugene Cul-breath, who took off around right end, broke three tackles, and went the last 30 yards untouched. Temple went for two points after Culbreath's score, but failed on a running play. "After that interception, I thought it was over," said Lucas, who was 28 of 47 passing for 300 yards and two touchdowns, which gave him 15 for the season and a school-record 42 for his career. "I looked up at the sky and asked for one more Ipossession. When I went back on the field, I was smiling." The penalty-marred first half included two turnovers by each team.

Temple, which limited Rutgers to 63 yards rushing and 107 yards passing in the first half, had a 14-6 lead before the Scarlet Knights scored on an 8-yard pass over the middle from Lucas to Harper just 35 seconds before intermission. With Temple doing special things to take all-American candidate Battaglia (three receptions) out of the game, Reggie Funderburke caught nine of I Harwr had seven receptions and Bill Powell had six. Lucas tried to hit Powell for a two-point conversion after Harper's score, but missed, and Temple took a 14-12 lead to the locker room. "You look at the penalties and turnovers and we should have been down by more," Rutgers coach Doug Graber said. Temple went with Pat Bonner at quarterback for the last 10 minutes after starter Henry Burris threw four interceptions, including two on the Owls' first two possessions.

The first, Wt minutes into the game, was returned 43 yards for a touchdown By Kevin Tatum INQUIRER STAFF WRITER The Temple football team had kept a potent Rutgers offense in check for most of the game yesterday and needed to make one more defensive stop to claim its second Big East win. But the visiting Scarlet Knights, who were themselves trying to salvage something out of a disappointing season, came up with the clutch drive. Behind the leadership and passing of quarterback Ray Lucas, Rutgers traveled 76 yards down the Veterans Stadium field in 10 plays and claimed a 23-20 victory when Lucas hit wide receiver Steve Harper with a 13-yard touchdown pass with just under a minute and a half left. The touchdown put Rutgers ahead 21-20, and a two-point conversion pass from Lucas to tight end Marco Battaglia provided the final margin. Temple ran out of downs at its 40-yard line on its final possession, and Rutgers was able to run out the clock.

Rutgers' record improved to 4-6 pie, playing its last game of the season, finished 1-10, 1-6 in the conference and with a five-game losing streak. "I don't know how they mustered that last drive up," Temple linebacker Willie Brown said. "We shut them down all day. I don't know where that came from." Only minutes earlier, Temple was celebrating an interception of a Lucas pass by defensive back Allan Jackson. But the Owls couldn't keep possession, which allowed Rutgers one more crack at winning the game, and Lucas delivered.
