Sunday, December 4, 1994 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER NJ-C17 SOUTH JERSEY HIGH SCHOOLS INSTALL Brick captures Group 3 crown in a squeaker Immaculate Conception wins state parochial title The Lions avenged last year's loss to St. Joseph for the championship with their 20-6 victory. Attention Contractors! Home Depot announces an exciting new opportunity for installers. Brick's title was its sixth in the 21-year history of the playoffs, but the previous five came in Group 4, including the last one, in 1992.

Brick's defense contributed to the victory as Brock Valles raced 25 yards for a touchdown with a fumble, and Rob Sack returned an interception 20 yards for a TD that provided a 21-9 lead in the fourth quarter. Ross scored on a 2-yard run with 7:57 left in the game to complete a five-play, 48-yard drive. Ross ran in the conversion for a 14-0 lead. Ross (7 of 11, 135 yards) then connected with Redd on a 27-yard scoring pass two plays after Duane Rem-bert recovered a St. Joseph fumble on the 10-yard line.

The ball was moved back to the 27-yard line on a clipping penalty. "We had bad field position the whole game, plus you can't throw the ball when the quarterback is on his back all the time," Sacco said. "On defense, I thought we did a good job against a lot of athletes and we tried to contain their quarterback. But he still found kids open twice for touchdowns." By Joey Culligan INQUIRKR CORRESPONDENT MONTCLAIR, N.J. Too many big plays by Immaculate Conception yesterday prevented St.

Joseph from successfully defending its state Parochial 1 group championship. Immaculate Conception defeated the visiting Wildcats, 20-6, at Codey Field to avenge a 13-0 loss to coach Paul Sacco's team in last season's inaugural state parochial final. The victory also capped an 11-0 season for the Lions, their first unbeaten season since 1974, when they went 9-0. St. Joseph, which had won five consecutive playoff titles four in South Jersey Parochial along with last year's state title finished its season with a 74 record.

Lions quarterback Gil Ross passed Immaculate Conception outgained St. Joseph, 222-116, in total yardage. The Wildcats had 87 yards rushing and 29 passing. "Our offense just wasn't clicking," said Cantz, who completed his only passing attempt of the game on the touchdown play. "On the plays where our line blocked well, somebody else made a mistake.

And when someone else made a good play, the line didn't. There just wasn't a play where everybody did the right thing." The Lions took a 6-0 lead with 1 minute, 20 seconds left in the first half on Ross' 34-yard pass to split end Omar Cheeseboro. The play was set up when Mitch Jules blocked a St. Joseph punt and Shawn Redd recovered the ball on the Wildcats' 34.
