Questel was a veteran of the stage, the screen and vaudeville. She played Woody Allen's intrusive, omnipresent mother in the movie New York Stories. Born in the Bronx, Ms. Questel was discovered at 17 when she was signed to perform on the vaudeville circuit. She did imitations of popular performers such as Maurice Chevalier and Marlene Dietrich.

When animator Max Fleischer heard one of Ms. Ques-tel's perform Mae Questel in a 1978 photograph ances, he signed her to take over the squeaky voice of Betty Boop. The sound was actually modeled on the voice of another actress, Helen Kane, who created a sensation on Broadway in 1928 with a "boop-boop-a-doop" rendition of the hit song "I Wanna Be Loved by You." The Betty Boop character was retired in 1939, but Ms. Questel returned to the character when Betty appeared in the 1988 movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit In 1933, Ms. Questel created the voices of Olive Oyl and Sweet Pea for the Popeye cartoons.

In the Nation and the World Owen Bradley Nashville producer, 82 Owen Bradley, 82, who produced hits by Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn and was credited with making Nashville the meqpa of country sic, died Wednesday in Nashville. In 1955, Mr. Bradley opened the first recording studio on Nashville's Music Row, then opened the 'Nashville office of Decca Records three years later. He ran it for 16 years and produced hits by Cline, Lynn, Brenda Lee, Conway Twitty, Ernest Tubb and many others. Mr.

Bradley was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1974. Robert A. Houghton RFK murder investigator, 84 Robert A. Houghton, 84, the former assistant Los Angeles police chief who led the police investigation into Sen. Robert F.

Kennedy's assassination and the Charles Man-son murders, died in Los Angeles Dec. 31 of heart failure. Mr. Houghton was determined not to repeat the botched record of the Dallas police when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

Although JFK's suspected assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was captured quickly, he was soon slain in custody by Jack Ruby. When Robert Kennedy was shot to death at the Ambassador Hotel on June 5, 1968, police immediately arrested Sirhan B. Sirhan, who was convicted of the murder and is serving a life term. Jack T. Conway, 80, a labor leader and social activist who was instrumental in the establishment of Head Start and other programs during the Johnson administration's war on poverty, died Tuesday in Sarasota, Fla. Mr. Conway headed President Lyndon B. Johnson's Community Action Program, which administered grants to hundreds of communities and was part of the Office of Economic Opportunity. Conway was president of Common Cause where he was a vocal' opponent of the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1975.
