They do not yet belong to the union and had no voice in the negotiations, but the rookie salary cap in the proposed contract would have a huge impact on them. "Glenn Robinson (last year's top pick got like $60 million guaranteed," Glass said. "Joe Smith Ithis year's No. 1 will get between $7 and $10 million guaranteed under this deal.

That's a pretty big difference, don't you think?" Len Elmore, the agent for Smith, has said he is contemplating a suit. But agents considering challenging the rookie cap would find themselves caught between the interests of their rookie clients, who would be hurt by it, and their veteran clients, who overwhelmingly favor limits on rookie salaries. Lee Fentress, the agent for 76ers draftee Jerry Stackhouse, said he was not considering challenging the rookie cap. "I've heard some rumblings, but I think it would be a difficult legal position to sustain," he said. "I think the players' association has the right to bargain for current and prospective players." Agent Keith Glass, another decertification supporter, also said he thought his side's effort would fail. "The vote will show that courage is in short supply," he said.

So if the dissidents fail, will that be the end of it? Probably not. "Whoever loses is going to raise hell and file challenges," Glass said. Another reason today's event may only appear to clarify the NBA's immediate future is that the three-sided conflict could soon turn into a four-or even five-sided affair. And that could lead to more court action. Sacramento guard Mitch Richmond, a perennial all-star and a respected veteran, has filed an unfair-labor complaint against the NBA, charging that Stern's statements about the league shutting down for the season if the vote did not go its way amounted to "unfair coercion." Several agents said that if the dissidents lose the vote, more players may join Richmond's complaint.

"If the decertification is defeated, you'll see a number of players join Mitch Richmond, and the NLRB will have its work cut out for it," agent Bill Strickland said.
