Larry Riley, 39, a featured actor in the nighttime soap opera Knots Landing, died from kidney failure as a complication of AIDS, a series spokesman said. Mr.

Riley died Saturday at St. Joseph's Medical Center. Show spokesman Paul Gendreau said Monday that the actor had been ill for several months. Mr. Riley played Frank Williams, who arrived in Knots Landing four years ago with his wife and daughter while hiding out in the federal witness protection program.

An accomplished musician, Mr. Riley composed scores for several installments of the CBS series and sang on camera. He won last year's Soap Opera Digest Award for best supporting actor in a prime-time drama. In 1982, Mr. Riley received the Obie and Clarence Derwent awards for his role as C.J.

Memphis in the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Soldier's Play. He later starred in the film adaptation titled A Soldier's Story. Mr. Riley also appeared in the 1984 Louis Malle movie Crackers and starred in the short-lived 198S adventure series Stir Crazy. A native of Memphis, Mr.
