Monday, May 22, 1989 The Philadelphia Inquirer 5-E Keeper of the 'Zoo' becomes a ringmaster TV tonight Radio talk By David Bunculli The beginning of the best TV mini-series since Lonesome Dove is the finest offering of the evening while Channel 3's Evening Magazine is the Fawnest offering of the evening. Evening Magazine p.m., Ch. 3) When Fawn Hall first mused about her posMran-contra-scandal employment opportunities, she reportedly cited Barbara Walters as a role model Now, after being interviewed by that role model on national television, Hall is lowering her sights to see if she qualifies as the next Nancy Glass. All this week, she's co-hosting Eve ,1 radio, the nation's 9,087 commercial stations are being asked to run a 60-second radio-industry promotional announcement at 7:42 a.m. that includes 30 seconds of dead air.

The spot is part of a $100 million campaign, a joint effort by the National Association of Broadcasters and the Radio Advertising Bureau, titled "Radio: What Would Life Be Without It?" Within the industry, there is considerable grumbling that the whole idea is pretty dumb. Some radio trade magazines suggest the spot has pitted general managers, who tend to worry about selling more advertising, against program directors, who tend to worry about how to keep listeners from tuning out At WMGK-FM (102.9) and sister station WPEN-AM (950), general manager Larry Wexler said he was planning to run the spot, but he suspected programming guru Dean Tyler was not happy about it "Dean's been trying to talk to me about that, but I've been avoiding him," said Wexler. At another major station, which insists on remaining nameless, the commercial is getting deep-sixed. Explaining his decision, the station's program director said last week, "When people start tuning out the other stations, I want them to come to me." Static. The monthly Arbitrends arrived last week, bringing no real surprises.

WMMR remains on top, though its numbers are down a bit WUSL-FM (98.9) is a close second and KYW-AM (1060) and WEGX-FM (106.1) are tied for third, followed by WEAZ-FM (101.1). If there's a big story, it's that month-by-month ratings show that the new kid on the block, contemporary-dance WIOQ-FM (102.1). is coming on very strong. Michael Frohm, from WINS-AM in New York, has been named local sales manager at KYW. Joel Adler, who had that job, has taken over national sales.

WCAU-AM (1210) has hired two new producers, as of June 5. Abby Polosky is coming from WBBM-AM in Chicago to become executive producer of the station. Michael Thompson, now producer for Larry King on TalkNet, is coming to produce Tony Bruno and Alan Burke in the morning. By Joe Logan JaMjMtfWfltajy Writer Some people live charmed lives and WMMR-FM (93.3) Morning Zooman John De Belli seems to be one of them. Not only does the station pay him about $600,000 a year, now it's gone and named him operations manager.

With last Tuesday's departure of OM Ted Utx to run New York's WNEW-FM. DeBella's the No. 2 man at "MMR, possessing the authority to boss people around. His partner in management crime will be 2-to-6 p.m. jock Joe Bonadonna, who was just named program director.

"Yeah, it's like the inmates are running the asylum," DeBella chuckled fiendishly on Friday, noting that both jocks will keep their on-air shifts. Does this mean if you hate a record on "MMR, you should scream at DeBella? "No," he said, already ducking the tough calls, "you should scream at Joe Bonadonna." In other matters, DeBella says he is very close to signing another three-year contract, which he says will be his last on-air commitment "Right now it's just the legal dance, where two lawyers Luke Edwards in "I Know My First Name Is Steven," at 9 p.m. on Ch. 3. ning Magazine with Ray Murray which, most likely, is a bigger story than anything either will be reporting.

Live-In p.m., Ch. 10) Tonight's guest star is Ray Walston, the former My favorite Martian star who has a much more laudable role tonight as the grandfather in the first part of I Know My First Name Is Steven on NBC Small world especially for an ex-Martian. CBS. I Know My First Name Is Steven (9-u p.m., Ch. 3) Part of 2.

This mini-series sounds more exploitative and less outstanding than it is. It's about a deranged drifter who kidnaps a 7-year-old boy and convinces him, slowly and mercilessly, that he's no longer wanted by his real parents. After that, he keeps the boy as his "son" for seven years, until something happens that finally makes the child decide to run away. This drama answers every question you might have about such a case, then raises a lot you might not think to ask. It's a powerful, disturbing docudrama, full of scary moments and compelling performances.

Corin "Corky" Nemec, who figure how they can make more money off it." Keillor back Garrison Keillor, who for 13 years brought several million Americans along for a weekly stroll through the enchanted environs of Lake Wobegon, Minn, is returning to radio after a hiatus of nearly two years. Keillor announced Thursday at a public-radio conference in San Francisco that on Sept. 30 he would launch Garrison Keillor's American Radio Company of the Air, a weekly series that sounds like a kissing-cousin of his old A Prairie Home Companion. Lake Wobegon will certainly be a part of the show, as will some of the imaginary town's characters. But Keillor and Minnesota Public Radio, which will produce the show, stressed that the series would not be a reprise of APHC.

Keillor himself said he hadn't fully conceived the show. Asked to describe it, he demurred, saying, "I can't wait to find out" The humorist now a writer for the New Yorker magazine, did promise, however, that the two-hour program would include monologues, sketches and "classic American music." The show, to be broadcast live at 6 p.m. Saturdays, will have an initial run of 12 episodes. It will originate from New York, where Keillor now lives, or, occasionally, other cities, including St Paul, Minn, home of APHC for years. WHYY-FM plans to carry the show, although initially the station may tape it for broadcast Friday nights.

Dead air. Don't be shocked this Friday morning if your favorite radio station suddenly goes silent for 30 seconds. In an effort to make you more fully appreciate your daily dose of pfoys the older Steven (taking over from Luke Edwards, who's seen in the M.J. nr 3 A Mi drama opening hour), is excellent, and Arliss Howard, as the abductor, portrays his second memorably creepy mini-series villain. Two years ago, he played the rapist with the large vocabulary in Hands of a Stranger.

That drama, like this one, was directed wonderfully and intelligently by Larry Elikann. St. Elsewhere veteran Cindy Pickett and Beverly Hills Cop cop John Ashton play Steven's parents, and both of them impart perfectly the tensions that would follow such a horrifying event NBC. Kate AIHe p.m., Ch. 10) When CBS announced its 1989 fall schedule last week, Kate It AUie was not among the survivors.

This season finale, therefore, becomes the series' finale as welL Fittingly, it's a wish-fulfillment episode, a fantasy sequence about a leprechaun of sorts who visits to offer the fulfillment of any wishes they might desire. Too bad that neither Jane Curtin nor Susan Saint James opted for a series renewal. CBS. Cable Deadly Enemies (9-u p.m., LIF) Deadly TV show. This 1988 "lelemo-vie" is edited from a pair of episodes in the late, but hardly lamented, Supercarrier series.
