L. Priester, 44, former data clerk Larry Priester, 44, a former data- processing clerk for the federal government, died Sunday at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The cause of death was sickle-cell anemia, the incurable disease that had hounded him all his adult life. Already, he had undergone two kidney transplants, one of which came from his sister Marie Priester. He was preparing for a third transplant when he died.

While waiting, he underwent hemodialysis three times a week. The anemia so weakened him that it forced him to quit his job about seven years ago. It also left Larry Priester him with brittle bones, and he twice had his hip replaced, said his sister Delores McTillman. Mr. Priester was diminutive.

He stood just 5-feet-2 and never weighed more than 90 pounds, but he had a big heart. "He never complained, became bitter or lost his compassion for others," his sister said. "He never sought sympathy." And he never gave up. He wanted to see the Grand Canyon before he died, so, in July, he arranged to have his dialysis done in Las Vegas. From there, he and his family got to view the canyon via helicopter.

"He said it was awesome," his sister said. He is survived by his wife, Debbie; a son, Taj-Walid; a stepdaughter, Len-air; three sisters; three brothers; and his mother, Catherine. A viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday at Powell Funeral Home, 2432 N. 27th will be followed by services.

ASSOCIATED PRESS STUTTGART, Germany Novelist Michael Ende, 65, whose The Never-ending Story charmed millions of children, has died of cancer, his publisher said yesterday. Mr. Ende died Monday at a hospital in Stuttgart, the Thienemann publishing company said. His most famous book was The Neverending Story, which was published in 1979 and turned into a movie in 1984 by German director Deaths Here Larry Blanding, 41, transportation supervisor at The Inquirer, died Saturday at St. Agnes Medical Center of burns he suffered in a fire at his home in North Philadelphia on Aug.

2. Two of Mr. Blanding's three daughters also died from injuries suffered in the early morning fire at their home on Oxford Street. Helen, 11, died at the scene and Joi, 10, died last Wednesday at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

Another daughter, Jessica, 16, survived the fire with lesser injuries, and his son, Taj, 18, was at the home of his mother, Dyan Blanding, that night. Mr. Blanding joined The Inquirer in 1986, as a shift supervisor in transportation. He worked at the Schuylkill Printing Plant in Upper Merion.
