PAGE 2 SANDUSKY REGISTER SEPT. 28, 1967 Observers Arranged Truce By PETER RUTLEDGE United Press International U.N. truce observers arranged a cease-fire along the Suez Canal today after a seven- hour battle between Egyptian and Israeli troops that left 53 persons dead and nearly 100 wounded, most of them Egyptian civilians. Each side blamed the other for the heated artillery and mortar fight which was the most deadly since the end of the June war in the Middle East. The heaviest toll was reported in the Egyptian canal city of Ismailia.

Officials there said the Israelis poured 1,000 rounds of artillery and mortar fire into the city Wednesday, hitting homes, passenger trains and municipal water and electricity facilities. City Gov. Mobarak Pifaii said 36 civilians were killed and 86 seriously wounded in the shelling. An official nique put Egyptian army casualties at three dead and 12 wounded. An Israeli communique issued' in Jerusalem said four Israeli soldiers and 10 of them Arabs in Israeli- occupied killed in a series of fights along most of the canal's 100-mile length.

UPI correspondent Michael Dennigan reported from lia that dozens of private homes, shops and cafes were heavily damaged by the bombardment. Dennigan reported the burned out shells of three passenger train coaches were at the Ismailia railroad station. Officials said the coaches had been loaded with children bound for out-of-town schools. Children Injured No children were killed "but many were injured," officials said.

In Amman, informed sources said Jordanian King Hussein would soon visit Cairo for talks with Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser on the Middle East crisis. Wednesday's battle along the canal apparently started when Egyptian and Israeli forces facing each other across the waterway traded shots at Devresoir, 12 miles south of Ismailia. The fighting soon spread north to Ismailia itself, further north to Qantara and south of Suez City. Half 'N Half is just Half 'N Half unless it's ESMOND QUALITY CHEKD! SANDUSKY PHONE 625-9921 OFFER ALSO GOOD IN FREMONT VC Supports Buddhist Opposition To Thieu By DANIEL SOUTHERLAND SAIGON Buddhist leader Thich Tri Quang led 700 monks and nuns in a march on Independence Palace today, part of a nationwide protest he called against President-elect Nguyen Van Thieu that has the Viet Cong's "wholehearted support." The marchers squatted in the street in front of the palace until Thieu came out and met face-to-face with Tri Quang. About 2,000 other persons looked on. The demonstration came just four days before the national assembly is to announce whether it will promulgate Thieu's election, or invalidate the vote as defeated candidates and student groups have demanded. Although Tri Quang and his supporters have aligned themselves with some of the defeated candidates charging Thieu was elected by fraud, the demonstration today was protesting the government's recognition of a moderate Buddhist faction as the "mother church" of the country. The National Liberation -Front, political arm of the Viet Cong, announced in a clandestine broadcast that it had "full sympathy" and offered "whole hearted support" for the Buddhist opposition to Thieu.

Tri Quang handed Thieu a letter demanding that his decree recognizing the moderate Buddhists as the legal representatives of the church be withdrawn. Thieu said he needed more time, and would meet with Tri Quang later in the day. Tri Quang, a political genius sometimes called the "mad monk" and who materminded the overthrow of Dinh Diem in 1963, said he would wait on the lawn of the palace. He sent the demonstrators away and with a group of aides about him, sipped tea in the shade of a large tree, while Thieu went back to his office Tri Quang warned, however, that if he did not get a "satisfactory answer" within 24 hours, the demonstrators again would take to the streets. Meanwhile, Truong Dinh Dzu, the presidential runnerup, today defied police orders to turn himself in for questioning.

He sent a message, instead, saying he would come to see them when he was "not so busy." Runnerup Convicted Shortly after the election Dzu was convicted in criminal court of writing bad checks and illegally sending money to a bank account in San Francisco. "The reason they Want to arrest me is because I said to the press that the justice in the country is not independent of the Dzu spid. 'they take revenge through justice." About 500 Saigon University students also demonstrated. ''We strongly protest the dark maneuverings of the Americans in the recent elections," their leader declared. "Wfe ask them to change their policy which has always been to support individuals rather than the Vietnamese people."
