returnt 11:30 P. M. the state Is a live question to the state is to provide law and another and none was safe. Until David was strong, he could do little. The advent of Christ brought a new meaning of conquest to the world.

The Messiah was of David line but he became an utterly different kind of conqueror. He stooped in lowly service to conquer; and reigned by dying on a cross. Through love He came to rule the hearts of men. ORGANIZATION A section of the lesson describes measures that David took to organ his court and his kingdom. To) conquer is not enough; before a king can rule he must provide for tha administering of law, and the securing of order.

Political government indispensable. The Christian Church, as the extension of the messianic body of Christ in the world, must likewise organized and ordered. It does this through its adminlstrativo bodies and by laws, often known as canons. Only so is the missionary task supported, and the Kingdom God won. KevinI A delegate rrom Czechoslovakia last week told a world conference of Protestant Christians meeting on "Faith and Order" at Lund, Sweden, that the social upheaval in Communist countries has hid a "salutary effect" on the Church behind the Iron Curtain. The speaker was Professor Joseph L.

Hromadka, of Prague, once con nected with the theological faculty of Princeton Seminary in this coun try. Only two Iron Curtain countries sent representatives to the Conference, Hungary being the other. "The tremendous changes In ths very structure of our social life," ha said, "have made our theology and Churches much more watchful than heretofore. Every word, eyery traditional church activity has to rethought, reinterpreted, re-evalu ated as to its integrity and relevance." Protestants, Roman Catholics, and Jews last week pitched in to help renovate the Union Sunday School, in Krocksville, an independent community organization founded there in 1880. Definite steps leading toward the organic union of the United Church of Canada and the Church of England in that country were recommended last week by a commission, on church unity of the former body.

The General Council of the United Church will meet in Hamilton, Sept. 10. Among the recommended steps are "table fellowship" at tha Lord's Supper for members of both church groups; periodic pulpit exchanges; conferences between tha two groups before establishing new churches, and the possibility of double church affiliation; To welcome delegates from the United Church at annual meetings of the Church of England in Canada, and vice versa; to extend various cooperative measures; and to engage in conversations at local levels. The Central Baptist Church, of Gary. boasts that 22 nationalities are represented in the church's membership.

Church advertising invites persons of other nationalities to join. A new firm, called the Christian Temperate Insurance began business last month in Houston, with offers of low life Insurance rates for alcoholic abstainers and church members. Two brothers, A. E. Hammonds and Ralph Hammonds, conceived the idea for the novel company af tef studying automobile fatality records over a period of two years.

Their advertising reads: "If you are in good health, do not drink, have a good reputation In your community, and are a member of a church, we invite you to be a policy holder of ours. No others need ask us to insure them." Maintaining that they will not insure anybody who does not believe in God, the brothers say their policy plan is "getting a beautiful reception from church people." Roman Catholic Church authori ties in Portugal have begun steps that may lead to the beatification of two of the shepherd children who saw an apparition of the Virgin of Patima in 1917. Parents of the chil dren are being questioned as the start of the proceedings. Statistical gains made by the churches last year again showed a sizable proportionate increase as compared with the population of the country as a whole. Figures released last week by the National Council of Churches made it evident that nearly three out of every five Americans are members of some religious body.

Population increase of the nation in 4951 was 1.7 percent. Church membership gains were 2 percent. The 2 percent gain was true for both Roman Catholics and for Protestants, according to r. Benson Y. Landis.

The same authority said that Roman Catholics now number 29,000,000, and Protestants 52,000,000. Judaism is third with 5,000,000. niilliT rr qUlliry. The church is to bring the states and nations of the world under the lordship of Christ so that God can be ruler and king. This is wny no easy divorce De- tween religion and politics is possible.

And it is also why no dependence the church on the State, or of the State on the church is desirable. The two have different spheres. But would be a mistake to suppose that the adrninistration of law is not necessary to the functioning of true religion The kingdom of David In ancient Israel shows the way in which God used a human kingdom, with its law and order, to serve the ends of His ministration of law frees men to prve the ends of love: and without law, under which we can take some Ty.j m.onf. DAVID'S CAPITAL Though David had become king of all Israel, parts of the country had not been won from the Canaanites. One of these was the city of Jebus, or Jerusalem. David's commander Joab, by a strategem, gained access 1 st 41 V1J aLL ocuuicu 11, iw mc Hebrew arms Thenceforth Jerusalem became capital for the nation. Until David captured it, it had been a pagan city. Now it was yoked to serve the Lord.

Religiously it ha become the most famous city in the world. A symbol of the City of God, it means all our cities can be won for Him. 2. A CONQUEROR The conquest of Palestine, begun under Joshua, was never completed until David's reign. Until the new kingdom was secure, David had to spend his time in military campaigns.
