6-C Monday, June 5, 1989 The Philadelphia Inquirer St. John gets Pantano's midday 'OGL gig TV tonight Radio talk By David Uiancullt Movies are being recycled tonight to cash in on the subsequent fame of certain stars, and to fill another of those long summer nights. Once again, there is no compelling reason to turn on the TV set, much less to keep it on. Big Trouble in Little China (8- 10 p.m., Ch. 29) The setting for this 1986 John Carpenter movie is San Francisco's Chinatown, and its presentation marks the second theatrical film to have its broadcast premiere on the Fox network, following last month's The Fly.

Kurt Russell stars. the break from the clubs to the theater situation," says DeBella. "Besides, this is a lot of stuff we can't do on the air." Static. Remember that item about WXTU-FM (92.5) morning-man Jeff Collins' syndicating his comedy songs through the New York company ProMedia? Well, that's true, but ProMedia called last week to say that contrary to Collins' claims a few weeks ago they never told the jock they liked his stuff better than what they produce in-house. Asked to respond, Collins said on Friday: "ProMedia puts out great comedy material for hundreds of stations and I'm just proud to be part of their team." At WEGX, Jay Beau Jones, Gary Leigh, Brian Murphy and Danny Bonaduce have all signed new contracts.

(Morning guys Welch Woody's contracts weren't up.) WPEN-AM (950) legends Joe Grady and Ed Hurst will be reunited on the air today from 4 to 6 p.m. for the station's annual remote broadcast from the Variety Club Celebrity Golf Tournament, to be held at Whitcmarsh Country Club. At 'IOQ's main competitor, WKGX, even program director i Charlie Qulnn concedes the station is hot. "They are growing fairly quickly and they're doing a good job in the format they chose," says Quinn, who disparagingly refers to the 'IOQ format as "disco." But at 'IOQ, general manager Mike Marder is all smiles. "If we keep doing things right, we have the potential to be a major factor within the next year," he says.

As in No. "It's possible," says Marder. DeBellawhere? John DeBella's Comedy All-Star Show, brought to you by the WMMR-FM (93.3) morning man, is at it again, this time Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Theater of Living Arts, 334 South St. In addition to DcBella, the comedy lineup will be Keith Robinson, Brian Whalen and headliner Larry Amoros.

The idea behind the monthly shows, says DcBella, is to showcase local and national comedy talent outside a nightclub venue where the law requires patrons to be 21. "A lot of comics want to make By Joe Logan Inquirer Stall WrIKr Bob Pantano is out as midday jock at oldies WOGL-FM (98.1) and Mike St. John is in. "I'm tickled to death." says St. John, 39.

a 15-year vet of Philadelphia radio who's been working in Pittsburgh since he and the rest of the on-air staff at former oldies competitor WIOQ-FM (102.1) were canned in January. All the while in Steel Town, St. John was plotting to return home, ideally at 'OGL He even had a short list of program directors he called periodically to check the job situation. But he had just about given up hoping. "My wife and I had finally put the house in South Jerscyl up for sale," says St.

John. Then, a couple of weeks ago, one of his calls to 'OGL program director Scott Walker paid off. Although Pantano, another longtime area jock, is leaving middays and his contract is not being renewed, he is not leaving the station entirely. He will still host 'OGL's Saturday Night Dance Party, from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Pantano jumped from 'IOQ to 'OGL late last July in what was the Kurt Russell (right) and Kim Cattrall in "Big Trouble in Little China." Home Is Where the Heart Is (9 only major talent raid during the fierce battle of the oldies stations. His ratings were respectable at 'OGL, but Pantano never seemed to pack the wallop in middays that the station had hoped for. "The expectations might have been higher for Bobby than what they should have been," says 'OGL general manager Steve Carver. "But this format is not about personality the music Is what it's all about." Pantano could not be reached. WIOQ update.

Speaking of 'IOQ, it has been a little more than four months since the one-time rock power and, briefly, oldies station, changed hands and formats. "Contemporary dance." they now call it, meaning some kind of hybrid of predominantly black-oriented urban WUSL-FM (98.9) and Top 40 WEGX-FM (106.1),. two' of the most popular stations in town. When iOQ made that move, more than a few people in local radio raised an eyebrow. They're going after the wrong audience, said several radio executives.

And they're taking on the wrong stations. Karly on, almost every day brought a bizarre new story from the "New Q-102." There was the jock who came from Phoenix and quit a day or so later, saying the station was the strangest he'd ever seen. And there were the tales about how at least two people at 'IOQ thought they were music director, a post generally held by one person. But the stories have stopped, the staff reportedly is happy, the station is cranking out perhaps the hottest music in town and 'IOQ's ratings arc going up and up. "It's one of the fastest-trending stations this market has seen in years," says one local media buyer.

se' If sS 11 p.m., Ch. 3) And here is where Rob Lowe is. At least this is where he was in 1987, when ho and Winona Ryder (of Beetlejuice and Heathers) made this theatrical-release drama about a Texas farm girl. Don't remember it? Here's a hint: It was released as Square Dance. Still don't remember it? That's because it was a sparsely circulated flop but with Lowe's alleged "sex video" dominating headlines, any Lowe movie is liable to get a high rating, even one in which he wears most of his clothes.

NBC. Shattered Spirits (9-11 p.m., Ch. 6) Martin Sheen stars as an alcoholic, and Melinda Dillon as his wife, in this well-made 1986 telemovie from Burning Bed director Robert Greenwald. However, the performances that truly stand out in this drama are those from two of the actors portraying the couple's children. Lukas Haas of Witness plays one; Roxana Zal, who played Jessica McClure's mother in Everybody's Baby: The Rescue of Jessica McClure, plays another.

Both are excellent. ABC repeat. Hollywood (10-11 p.m.. Chs. 23, 52) Part 1 of 13.
