FLORIDA TODAY, Wednesday, November 12, 1997 PS 7B Former NASA medical director 'Ham' Blackshear dies Laura J. Brown FLORIDA TODAY SATELLITE BEACH Hamilton Howard "Ham" Blackshear, a former medical director for NASA, died Saturday, Oct. 25, in Alabama. He was 75. Dr.

Hamilton was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from Tusculum College of Greenville, and served in the Navy V-12 program during World War II, completing his premedical education at the University of Virginia and the Naval OBITUARIES Compiled Nov. 11 by Laura Brown SYLVESTER BANKS MERRITT ISLAND Sylvester D. Banks, 72, a former dry cleaner, died Thursday, Nov. 6, at home.

Mr. Banks came to Brevard County in 1932 from Atlanta, where he was born. He was a Marine veteran of World War II. Mr. Banks was a member of Mt.

Zion Missionary Baptist Church on Merritt Island. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Banks of Merritt Island; sons, S. David Banks Jr. of Port St. John, Lester Banks of Albany, and Sandy Banks of Brandon; daughters, Patricia BanksLattimore of Port Orange, Florine "Cherri" Washington of Austin, Texas, and Sylvia Banks and Maria Banks, both of Merritt Island; and 10 grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Burial will be at Florida Memorial Gardens. Lewis-Ray Mortuary in Titusville is in charge of arrangements. JOHN FRICK MELBOURNE John R. Frick, 72, died Friday, Nov. 7, in Gainesville.

Mr. Frick was born in Tulsa, Okla. He came to Brevard County in 1955 from Oklahoma. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr.

Frick was employed by Piper Aircraft for more than eight years, and also worked for Brevard County for many years. Mr. Frick enjoyed jai alai and the study of ufology. He also wrote several books on science fiction. Survivors include his daughters, Pamela Hansen of Melbourne and Kim Frick and Susan Hudson, both of Palm Bay, and sons, Glenn Frick of Palm Bay and Bruce Frick.

No calling hours are scheduled. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Palm Bay. East Coast Cremation in Melbourne is in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made to American Lung Association of Florida, 1900 S.

Harbor City No. 302, Melbourne, FL 32901 or to American Heart Association, 2800 Aurora Road, Suite Melbourne, FL 32935. IRENE GARLINGE SATELLITE BEACH Irene Teresa Garlinge, 89, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the Wuesthoff Progressive Care Center. Mrs.

Garlinge was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She came to Brevard County more than 10 years ago from Bellport, N. Y. Survivors include her son, William Garlinge of Holbrook, N.Y.; daughters, Irene DeFelippis of Baltimore and Patricia Connelly of Satellite Beach; sisters, Grace Sutphin of Port Jefferson, N.Y., and Margaret Bartels of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 tonight at Beach Funeral Home in Indian Harbour Beach.

Services will be in New York. Beach Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. RUTH HARRINGTON PALM BAY Ruth Elizabeth Harrington, 85, a homemaker, died Monday, Nov. 10, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. Mrs.

Harrington was born in Philadelphia. She came to Brevard County in 1980 from Fort Lauderdale. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star in Philadelphia. Survivors include her son, David Harrington of Palm Bay. No calling hours are scheduled.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church. Fountainhead Memorial Funeral Home in Palm Bay is in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made to Kidney Foundation of Central Florida, 1208 N. Mills Orlando, FL 32803.

IN MEMORIAM Hospital in St. Albans, N.Y. He entered the Air Force Reserve after 'the war and completed his medical training and received his degree from Cornell University Medical School in New York City. He returned to active duty during the Korean Conflict and completed Pararescue and Survival training in 1951, Advanced Survival training in 1956, Flight Surgeons training in 1963, and Special Air Warfare training in 1967. Blackshear became a member of the medical staff at Holloman Air Force JOHN JAKUBOWSKI HAZLET, N.J. John F. Jakubowski, 81, a retired foreman, died Monday, Nov. 10, at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, N.J. Mr.

Jakubowski was born in New Hartford, N.Y. He came to Brevard County in 1995 from Jersey City, N.J. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Keyport, N.J.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Jakubowski; son, John Jakubowski of Hazlet; daughters, Karen Runge of Matawan, N.J., and Joyce Phenicie of Cocoa; brother, Henry Jakubowski of Marcy, N.Y.; sister, Sue Link of Marcy; and three grandchildren. No calling hours are scheduled. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fountainhead Cemetery in Palm Bay. RUTH McDONOUGH McDONOUGH RUTH McDONOUGH MELBOURNE Ruth Ellen McDonough, 65, a former sales person for Office Equipment, died Monday, Nov.

10, at home. Mrs. McDonough was born in Kennebunk, Maine. She came to Brevard County 19 years ago from the a nama Canal. She was an McDONOUGH A veteran.

Mrs. McDonough was a Women's Army Corp veteran. She was a member of the Cups and Saucers Bowling Team and the Melbourne Maids Bowling Team. She volunteered at the Melbourne Civic Theatre. Survivors include her sons, Thomas McDonough of Rockledge, Michael McDonough of Rancho Cuca Monga, and Patrick McDonough of Melbourne; daughter, Kathryn McWherter of Overland Park, sisters, Kathy Goulet of Stevenson, and Marjorie Cabelle of Orlando; and three grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 tonight at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home in Rockledge. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Brevard Memorial Park. Donations may be made to Holmes Regional Hospice, 1900 Dairy Road, West Melbourne, FL 32904.

Subsequently, he served as chief of medicine with the space program at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

After retiring from the Air Force, he served NASA as medical director. While at Holloman Air Force Base, he was involved with working with approximately 60 chimps who were named after the medical staff's personnel. By the luck of the draw, Ham was chosen to make the first flight into space. BOBBY ROBERTS TITUSVILLE Bobby Ray CAROLYN Roberts, 61, a former employee for General Tire died Friday, Nov. 7, at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville.

Mr. Roberts was born in Titusville and was a lifelong Brevard County resident. Survivors include his caregiver, Carol Dodd of Titusville. No calling hours or services are scheduled. Burial will be at LaGrange Cemetery in Titusville.

North Brevard Funeral Home in Titusville is in charge of arrangements. LIDIA RODNEY PALM BAY Lidia Elizabeth Rodney, 15, a student, died Sunday, Nov. 9, at home. Lidia came to Brevard County in 1986 from Boston, where she was born. Survivors include her mother, Jennifer Rodney of Palm Bay; sister, Madeline Rodney of Palm Bay; brothers, Harry Rodney, James Rodney, Samuel Mark Rodney and John Rodney, all of Palm Bay; maternal grandmother, Shirley Rodney of Trinidad, West Indies; and maternal grandfather, George O'Glesiaz of Puerto Rico.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Grace Bible Sanctuary in Melbourne. No services are scheduled. Buggs Funeral Home in Melbourne is in charge of arrangements. Donations for the family may be made to Grace Bible Sanctuary, 1106 Line Melbourne, FL 32901.

DEATH NOTICE ELIZABETH "BETTY" A. CATE Elizabeth "Betty" A. Cate, 80, formerly of Indian Harbour Beach, died November 9, in Asheville, North Carolina. A longtime member of the United Methodist Church of Satellite Beach, Betty was retired from Patrick AFB after 35 years of Civil Service. She had served in the US Navy during WWII.

She leaves her beloved son, Michael, his wife Debbie, grandsons, Robert, Jonathon, Christopher and David, all of Asheville, North Carolina and her beloved sister, Ruth Rowley of Duxbury, Massachusetts and niece, Linda and nephew, Steven. Funeral services will be private with interment at Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury, Massachusetts. Memorial Donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church, 450 Lee Satellite Beach, Florida 32937. During his career Dr. Blackshear attained the rank of colonel and retired in 1968.

He remained with NASA and the space program after his military career. He was a member of American Legion Post 200 and VFW Post 4643, both of Satellite Beach. Survivors include his brothers, Robert Blackshear of Birmingham, and David Blackshear of Charleston, S.C. No calling hours are scheduled. Services were private.

Valley Chapel Funeral Home in Alabama is in charge of arrangements. PORT ST. JOHN Carolyn Lee Saito, 53, a photographer, died Sunday, Nov. 9, at Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge. Mrs.

Saito was born in Ozark, Ala. She came to Brevard County recently from Hawaii. Survivors include her parents, Owen and Bertha Fike of Satellite Beach. No calling hours are scheduled. Private services were held.

Beach Funeral Home in Indian Harbour Beach is in charge of arrangements. HELAINE SIGMOND ROCKLEDGE Helaine "Sandra" Sigmond, 82, a retired electrical equipment tester, died Sunday, Nov. 9, at Harborside Health Care. Ms. Sigmond was born in Elizabeth, N.J.

She came to Brevard County in 1961 from Newark, N.J. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockledge. There are no local survivors. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 tonight at North Brevard Funeral Home in Paul J.

LOVELL Ottis B. Lovell, 80, a retired steel worker, died of natural causes Monday, November 10, 1997. Mr. Lovell, son of Alice Clark and Richard Lovell, was born in Margret, Alabama, October 8, 1917. Due to the death of his father he went to work in the coal mines at the age of twelve to support the family.

Within two years his baseball prowness enabled him to become a star within the coal mine leagues thus yielding higher wages and a better life. At the beginning of WWII he worked for Cobb Construction building new airbases including McCoy and McDill in Florida. Mr. Lovell then enlisted in the US Army rising to the rank of Master Sgt. He was a member of the first invasion team landing on the main islands of Japan.

After marching to Nagasaki he gave first hand reports on the destruction of the City by the Atomic Bomb. He then liberated several prisoner of war camps holding American personnel. After the War Mr. Lovell became shop supervisor at Birmingham Spring Birmingham, Alabama. Mr.

Lovell designed and built suspension systems for the racing industry including the Allison brothers and Red Farmer. His work also included the Oscar Mayer Weiner Mobile. Mr. Lovell and his wife of 59 years, Verna, retired in 1979, becoming residents of Titusville. Mr.

Lovell is survived by his daughter, Sharon Gray, Cocoa, Florida; a sister, Martha Griggs, Birmingham, Alabama; two grandchildren, Mrs. Lisha Dahoda and Mr. Todd Gray of Port St. John; a sister-in-law, Mary Landry of Louisiana; brother-in-law, Gordon Driver of Washington, DC; son-in-law, Russell Gray of Cocoa and four great grandchildren. Calling Hours are 6-8 p.m.

Thursday at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home. Services are 1:00 p.m. Friday at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will be at Brevard Memorial Park.A.
