Stamp honors a local's granddad nULT MILT SALAMON Knowing Indian Harbour Beach resident John Cleland long enough to risk his wrath, we're not exactly following that two-star Army general's implied orders. "I am proud of my grandfather, General John L.

Hines, and of my military heritage and service," he told us. "However, I prefer to keep it low key." Being pictured next to his famous grandfather may fall short of "low key." We hadn't been aware that General Hines pictured here May 3 (also below) in the new Distinguished Soldiers stamp issue was John's grandfather. Alerting us to the relationship, and that John and wife Clara had gone to D.C. for the Postal Service dedication ceremony, was John's three-star Army friend, Satellite Beacher "Mac" McAlister. "IT WAS a wonderful ceremony," John said when he child and, indeed, until he died at the age of 100 years.

My memories are too many to put in your column. To me, his strongest attribute was' strength of character exemplified by total integrity, love of country, dedication to duty, family loyalty and respect for the laws of our country. Duty, Honor, Country was not just a motto to him, it was a way of life." SHORT INTRO to Hines' grandson, Maj. Gen. John R.D.

Cleland, retired from the Army in 1980 after 37 years of active service: An enlistee at age 17, he was commissioned and fought as a Parachute Infantry unit commander in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He served on the Army General Staff and the Joint Staff. He's pictured wearing the Silver Star Medal and Purple Heart Medal with oak leaf cluster. John's a member of the US Army Infantry Hall of Fame. ITS ARMED FORCES Day at Patrick AFB, noon to 3:30 at the survival pavilion, Paul Hoffman of Indialantic says.

space for only a few career highlights: In Cuba with 2nd Infantry Regiment; Silver Star (gallantry in action). In Mexico with Pershing's punitive expedition against Pancho Villa. With American Expeditionary Force in France. Rose to major general. Awarded Distinguished Service Cross for valor, and Distinguished Service Medal.

Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army under General Pershing. Chief of Staff of the Army. ADDING luster to Cleland's family history, Hines married Rita Wherry, daughter of a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, William M. Wherry John's great-grandfather. More immediately, John said, "my dad was in WW I and won a Distinguished Service Cross in France when he was a second lieutenant.

And three of my sons were Army officers." "YOU ASKED what I remember about my grandfather," John continued. "He was a vital part of my life as a V- MA due, not for my grandfather and the other' three distinguished soldiers who appeared on the stamps, but for the military in general and for the U.S. Army veterans of WW I and WW II in particular. I'm sure my grandfather would say that he'd accept the honor on behalf of the soldiers with whom he was so proud to serve, soldiers who answered their country's call and did their duty well and faithfully." JOHN HINES "born in 1868 of Irish immigrant parents in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.," his grandson said graduated West Point in 1891. We have returned our call.
