3C FLORIDA TODAY, Sunday, August 2, 1998 BRIEFS Chargers eliminate Cocoa finishes season at 1 1 -1 1 Dodgers blank Manatees 6-0 iiivjitia.il i. Nrw Anna Maria Delia Costa FLORIDA TODAY COCOA Calling the Jackson Chargers an offensive soccer power is an understatement. Against the Chargers, using the cliche "it takes only one goal to win a game," is just plain silly. The undefeated team out of Mississippi scored seven goals in its first-round playoff game against the Miami Tango on Friday night alone, and added eight more on Saturday night to its two-day goal total of 15, to defeat the Expos 8-2 in the USISL Southeastern Division championship at the Cocoa Expo. While Jackson (18-0) advances to host at the least one re-gional playoff game next weekend, the Expos season is finished at 11-11.

"They're definitely the best team in the league," Cocoa Expo coach Homer Bozorg said. Four players from the Chargers are in the top ten in the USISL standings in scoring. Dominic Schell, Paul Oyuga, Jeremy Shortt and Boniventure Maruti have 78 goals between them this season. The squad averages 6.1 goals a game. Maruti, who came to the U.S.

from Kenya a year ago, added to his 28 goals in 17 games with a goal in each of Saturday's halves. After he scored his first during the 17th minute to give his team a 2-0 lead, he did what he calls the "Caterpillar" dance. "I learned it in Kenya," the 21-year-old said. "When all of the guys come around you, you do the dance. All the guys back home did it." The forward already has wrapped up the league's scoring title.

"First, I have a great team that has a lot of chemistry," Maruti said. "Those guys made it simple for me to adapt to this soccer." Cocoa's D.J. Carvajal, who is 17, did his best to keep Maruti at bay. The last time the two teams met, Maruti had five goals; on Saturday Carvajal held him to two. But Carvajal's good friend, Oyuga also from Kenya scored four goals in the game to make up for it.

After scoring the team's third goal midway through the first half, Oyuga scored the team's fourth, sixth and seventh goals in the second half. "We played hard, and this team has weathered the storm," Oyuga said. "Now the extra pressure is on because every team we play is playing us hard be- cause we're winning." The only player out of the scoring foursome for Jackson that didn't score was Shortt. Schell got into the action in the first 10 minutes of the game, scoring the first goal of the game, and Sheldon Bennett finished out the scoring for the Chargers in the final minutes of the game. And that wasn't even the full extent of what could have been the damage in the first half.

Two goals, one by Oyuga and one by Maruti, were negated by offside penaties. Jackson had 11 shots on goal the first half, and Expos goalie Anttli Laitinen had five saves. The Expos had only five shots on goal the first half, and were kept on their heels for a good part of the second. Cocoa's Eddie Enders scored a goal early in the second half, and Fitzgerald Haig scored another on a penalty kick given for a Jackson hand ball to bring Cocoa within two goals before Oyuga opened the gap. "We had a good season; as a matter of fact, after some of the boys left we still had a stronger team in terms of the chemistry," Bozorg said.

"(Friday) night we beat a powerful team, and (Saturday night) our boys were very tired. Jackson was too good of a team. I don't think we could've beat them if we weren't tired. "But they've given us some ideas for improvement for next season." N4 .1 I mourn? Josef Corso, FLORIDA TODAY RYO TAKAHASHI, right, of the Cocoa Expos battles paul Oyuga of the Jackson (Miss.) Most of the 22 starters were picked from the Eastern Conference. One notable Western Conference player who was left off the U.S. when reserves were announced was San Jose's Eric Wynalda, the all-time leading scorer for the U.S. national team. The U.S.

starters include Hejduk, Kansas City's Pfeki, Metrostars Tony Meola, Tab Ramos and Alexi Lalas, captain Thomas Dooley and Brian McBride (Columbus), Cobi Jones (Los Angeles), John Harkes and Eddie Pope (D.C. United) and Marcelo Balboa (Colorado). Poland's Peter Nowak (Chicago), voted a starter for the World All-Stars, will miss the game because of a sprained left knee. However, the lineup is still formidable with Valderrama, Campos, Mauricio Cienfuegos (Los Angeles), Adrian Paz (Colorado), Geoff Aunger and Marco Etcheverry (D.C. United) and Raul Diaz Arce (New Orlando caught the attention of MLS officials when the city was the site of games during World Cup '94.

The league held spring training here this year and Sunday's game will be part of a doubleheader featuring an opening match between the U.S. women's national team and Canada. Although Florida has not been a particularly strong market for the MLS attendance-wise, with Tampa Bay and Miami ranking near the bottom of league averages, a crowd of more than 40,000 is expected. And while officials won't say that the weekend could provide a gauge of how Central Florida might support a team, they clearly are measuring the reception for the first major MLS event outside a league city. "We will probably try and put other games in the market to test it over the course of time," MLS commissioner Doug Logan said.

"But it's not No. 1 on our (expansion) list for 2000 or 2002." The format for the game has changed, but many of the players remain the same. West. Major League Soccer is giving its U.S. stars a chance to settle a score against the world. And while a victory today in the MLS All-Star game will not necessarily atone for a poor World Cup showing this summer, it would do wonders for some bruised egos. Nine members of the U.S.

team that went 0-3 in France are among 11 starters for the MLS USA All-Stars, who will face the league's top world players at the Florida Citrus Bowl. "We want to show all those guys that we're right there with them," Tampa Bay Mutiny midfielder Frankie Hejduk said. "We've got a team here, the starting 11, that has played together before. We're going to come at them with everything we've got. Let's just hope they're ready for it." The organization is looking for support from the community to prove, once again, that the protected waters along the Space Coast are ideal for small boat sailors everywhere. The Olympic windsurfing trials will take place here in late 1999. Dave Noble of Indian Harbour Beach has spent a major part of the last three decades pursuing his love of small boat sailing. Now, this Thiokol Corporation engineer is the proud father of two sons, ages 7 and 10, and he wants them to learn the priceless lessons he learned from sailing. This includes not only the joy of sailing, but the development of self confidence and the satisfaction of meeting new challenges.

To. that end, Noble has organized a youth sailing program at the Melbourne Yacht Club. He ideal conditions this area offers," Noble said. "How can I judge the success of this program?" Noble asked. "On the last day of class, the group sailed from Melbourne Harbor across the Indian River to Melbourne Beach Pier for lunch and a swim.

"On the way home, I looked behind me and saw 14 dinghies sailing together, under complete control by kids who were laughing, splashing and having fun in boats they had never sailed before taking our course. That scene seemed to make all our efforts worthwhile." This popu My wife and I recently returned from a three-week cruise of the Abacos aboard our 30-foot sloop, the Yankee Rebel (in case some of you might have wondered what happened to the sailing column). On our first voyage to the Bahamas, we discovered what many Space Coast cruisers already know; that a long night's sail from Florida's east coast can take you to some of the most pristine cruising grounds in the world. In the Bahamas, the water is clear, warm and shallow. The snor-keling is incredible and abounds with brilliantly colored tropical fish, pastel coral and and fascinating life beneath the surface. The "out island" villages are picturesque and undeveloped, and the native Abocoans are both friendly and accommodating.

We joined a small flotilla of I friends who have made many friends in the Abacos. Jerry and Rachel Ross of Melbourne and Mike and Dee Wilson of Satellite Beach formed our three-boat flotilla. At Green Turtle Cay, we joined other local sailors; Chris and Sue Reynolds of Indian Harbour Beach, along with Lenny and Sheryl Becket and David and Marcl Hutson of Satellite Beach. The camaraderie among other sailors is what makes cruising so "enjoyable. For those who are considering 9 and his team of parents and willing volunteers already graduated 17 young sailors this summer.

His main assistant is Sari Wakefield, a senior at Satellite Beach High School, who learned how to sail at the MYC several years ago and now teaches sailing at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club. On Aug. 20, a new beginning sailing class will be offered to area youth between the ages of 9 and 17. Noble said that this program, made possible through the support of the MYC, is the only community sailing program that he is aware of that is offered to junior sailors at no cost. The MYC provides the boats (Optimist prams and Sunfish), the training site and the published materials.

Noble plans to include instruction in small boat racing for those who have taken the initial course.
