AND rj THE HUNTED" "Them" referred to by dazed little girl are. 9-FOOT ANTS HORRIFY And once the horrifyinjr dis covery has been made, tension is wound tighter. For these monstrous 9 to 12-foot ants, mutations to the 1945 atomic test in New Mexico, must be found and destroyedeggs, queens and all unless, within a year it's predicted they're to wipe man from the of the earth.

There's a nice ironic touch in that, though no particular point is made of it. With death and dazed fright! stalking the screen through the film's early portions, things really begin to hum when it is discovered queens have taken off on their nuptial flight, escaping the flame throwers and are all set to start bringing new little pardon, BIG monsters into the world. Where they? And how to get at them? Those are the questions which must be answered in a hurry man is to survive. 700-MILE DEATH HUNT One of the queens is disposed of without much trouble, apparently, her end dismissed via a few lines of dialogue. But the other- well, that's something else again.

How civilization is saved we hope, though we wouldn't guarantee an or two wasn't overlooked in volves a life-and-death ant-hunt through the 700 miles of storm drains honeycombing the foundations of Los Angeles. Three writers George Worth ing, Ted Sherdeman and Russell Hughes have brewed a honey of nerve-Jangler in this one. Gordon Douglas hasn't missed a trick, and neither have the special effects and sound departments. As the cast, James Whitmore, James Arness, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon, little Sandy Descher and the rest, they take it all in deadly earnest, as well they may. And as for "Them." themselves they're just wonderful! Deert Open 10:45 A.M.

Two detectives turn up all right listen to Barbara's story. But when they can't find the body in George Sanders' apartment, they begin to suspect Barbara's been having a bad dream or just isn't well. So, from that point on, our increasingly hysterical heroine is against both the police and the murderer, who knows she knows and plants clues all over the place prove she's mad and a writer of poison pen notes to boot. Singularly obtuse, even for movie policemen, the cops swallow San ders' stories hook, line and sinker. Instead of protecting Barbara, who momentarily expects the suave former Nazi menace to kill her too, they drag her off to the observation ward as a mental case.

What's worse, upon her release. she is left at the killer's mercy and has to run for her life, literally right to the top of a tall construc tion job with Sanders huffing and puffing at her terrified heels. The fact that the bachelor girl acquires a fiance out of all the sorry goings-on In the person of Gary Merrill's police lieutenant may make it all worth while for her. But so far as direction, acting and credibility go, it might have been better if Barbara had minded her own business and gone back to sleep, then there wouldn't have been any picture. And that would have been all right, too.

MILDRED MARTIN Boy's Trim Worn By Mary Martin LOS ANGELES. June 16 (AP). Stage star Mary Martin arrived to day, sporting a new trim which she called "a little boys haircut about half an inch long in front and nothing in the back." Here for a Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Association produc tion of "Peter Pan," the red-haired actress said the cut was given her by the neighborhood barber near her home in New Canaan, Conn. "I went in and told him to cut like the little boys," Bhe told re porters. Graduates Hear Italian Consul Dr.
