LOS ANGELES TIMES THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1992 DOUGLAS: Serious Flaws Found in C-17 Gen. James Van Fleet, 100; Hero Exalted by Truman Times Staff and Wire Reports FOLK CITY, Fla. -James Alward Van Fleet, whom President Harry S. Truman pronounced "the greatest general we ever had," died Wednesday. He was 100.

The retired -star general, led combat campaigns on at the Battle of the Bulge and in the Korean War, died in his sleep at his ranch in this mid-Florda city. Van Fleet, who also fought in world War I and played a key role the Greek civil war, made his public appearance in March during a 100th birthday celebration hometown. Thank you very much, I hope I some of it," Van Fleet said fore his wheelchair in a barely warble voice. He often gave a knowing nod, an approving smile proud salute. A stroke a few ago affected his right side sometimes he used his left hand to help raise his right.

"Gen. Van Fleet is the greatest general we have ever had," Truman said in 1953 when Van Fleet retired with four general's stars, three each of the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and his most prized possession, the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Van Fleet's strategies during World War II are still studied at war colleges, particularly his tactics at Utah Beach on D-Day, where he led the 4th Infantry Regiment ashore, and at the Battle of the Bulge. Van Fleet also was credited as the general who drove communist guerrillas from Greece after World War II and for chasing the Chinese communists from South Korea back to the 38th parallel -the turning point in the Korean conflict. Truman said: "I sent him to Greece and he won the war.

I sent Associated Press Gen. James Van Fleet in 1950 him to Korea and he won the war." Van Fleet, then a lieutenant general, succeeded Matthew B. Ridgway as commander of United Nations ground forces in Korea in 1951 after Ridgway succeeded Gen. Douglas A. MacArthur, who was fired by Truman.

Funeral services were set for Wednesday in Washington with burial at Arlington National Cometery. Bill Williams; Played Kit Carson in '50s Series Ny BURT A. FOLKART FAMES STAFF WRITER Williams, the virile, boyishly good looking actor who rode the eNvision range as the famous Indian scout in 104 episodes of "The Adventures of Kit Carson" in the early 1950s, has died at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank of complications of a brain tumor. A featured player in such Westfilms as "Gunfight at the O.K.

Corral" and "Rio Lobo," Williams was 77 when he died Monday. Unlike many adventure stars of the 1930s and '40s, Williams was an athlete who did much of his own riding and stunts. For years, he and his actress wife, Barbara Hale--the omnipresent Della Street on television's "Perry lived on a working ranch in Yucca Valley where they prided themselves on raising their three children far from the city. Williams, born William H. Katt in Brooklyn, said in a 1951 interview with The Times that he- -like many of his friends at Public School 122-yearned for the wideopen spaces he would someday occupy.

He became an expert swimmer and a junior national champion in his teens and credited swimming with his physique. His father was an actor and he gravitated toward show business, beginning in vaudeville with the Stuart Morgan dancers for nine years. After Army Air Corps service in World War I1, he made his debut as a contract player for RK0. He was toned to Universal and under the name Bill Williams was featured in the 1944 mystery "Murder in the Blue Room." His more than 50 films included "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," "Those Endearing Young Charms," "The Great Missouri Raid," "Son of Paleface," "Bronco Buster," "Broken Star," "Scandalous John" and "Till the End of Time." He costarred opposite Hale in "A Likely Story" in 1946, the year they married. In 1951, he filmed the first of the 104 episodes that became the syndicated legacy of Kit Carson, with Don Diamond as his sidekick, righting wrongs and rescuing damsels in the popular series, which filmed for four years.

When he signed on in 1957 for the "Date With the Angels," a situation comedy TV series opposite Betty White, he reportedly Church of the Hills, Forest Lawn, told a publicist: "I never want to Hollywood Hills.
