I F4 MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 1992 SD LOS ANGELES TIMES COUNTERPUNCH LETTERS Warren Commission Defense Won't Wash MOVIE REVIEW The Future Is Grungy in 'Freejack' development executive or friend of a friend, available to all young writers, when they call saying, "I have just read the most fantastic screenplay, and this writer doesn't have an agent." Likewise, I have yet to have a studio executive be anything less than diligent when I've called to say, "There's a script I'd like to send to you that I'm just crazy about, written by someone you've never heard of before." Great scripts are that rare. If someone has the goods, believe me, we all stand at attention. Within industry circles, Alan Ladd has been, and continues to be, revered for his exemplary respect for all levels of filmmaking talent. As someone intimately involved with "Thelma Louise," let me assure you that he was no less deserving in this instance. The facts show that he, and all others who worked on this project, couldn't have acted more swiftly, effectively and, when the tough "green-lighting" issues came, more courageously.

For that, Ladd deserves all the credit in the world. DIANE CAIRNS Motion Picture Literary Agent International Creative Management known Callie Khouri and given to a friend within the broadest scope of the industry, who gave it to Ridley Scott's producing partner, who gave it to her development executive, who gave it to this literary agent on Friday afternoon. By Monday, the script was read, a meeting was set to sign the writer (who had no previous screenplays, no deals and no studio recognition) and this agent vigorously joined the collective cause in getting the screenplay set up and made. Further, when "Thelma Louise" was finally given back to the studios for consideration, the script was handed to Becky Pollack and Alan Ladd also on a Friday. By Monday, the script was read by the entire development staff, and firm offers of sizable proportions were made to the writer and Ridley's production company, which virtually guaranteed Ladd's commitment to make the picture.

After 12 years in the literary agency business, I find the majority of fellow literary agents reluctant to ignore the reader, story editor, Regarding Richard Mosk's Counterpunch, "The Plot to Assassinate the Warren Commission" (Dec. 30): It is predictable that Mosk would be defensive regarding the film's questioning of the single-bullet-theory conclusion drawn by the Warren Commission nearly 30 years ago, a commission on which he served. Mosk took the predictable route of attempting to reduce the intent of the film's political inquiries to the high jinks of media moguls who would misrepresent historical facts in order to make a fast buck. How sophomoric! The film "JFK" is not the first, nor will it be the last inquiry into this set of circumstances that resulted in deep political and economic disturbances within this country. Mosk and others who served on the Warren Commission may defend the single-bullet theory because to question the findings would lead to speculation that he and others had been duped.

The fact is, we may never know the truth until all documents and X-rays are released. If the Warren Commission and its collegial agencies had nothing to hide, why were these documents sealed and continue to be sealed? One does not need to see "JFK" to know that the evidence that contradicts the Warren Commission's single-bullet theory has been irresponsibly and inexcusably ignored and misrepresented for almost 30 years. JANE WINCHELL Los Angeles How does Mosk hope, to persuade anyone over age 10 that there is nothing to hide regarding J.F.K. when we can't see all the evidence until 2029? I am 63 years old. In 2029, I'll be 101 or not here at all.

MARIO A. PETACCIA Tallahassee, Fla. Oliver Stone's response to Richard M. Mosk 'JFK' Is Not IrresponsibleChoosing to Ignore the Evidence Is," Jan. 6) carefully skirted the central issue raised by Mosk and others regarding "JFK." What has drawn the sharpest criticism is the film's strident assertion that during the 1960s a far-flung conspiracy captured the main instruments of power in our country so that, as stated by Jim Garrison (Kevin Coslner), real democracy was supplanted by fascism.

Tom Hayden, quick to recognize this as the heart of the film, enthusiastically embraced it as a validation of his own '60s radicalism on the American Storybook," Metro, Dec. 30). There is something curious about this. In November, 1987, at a conference on the Nixon presidency at Hoffstra University, Hayden recalled that he and his fellow defendants at the Chicago Seven trial were certain that the United States was becoming a police state. As quoted by the Associated Press, Hayden said: "We thought we were going to jail for years, and in fact, it was people like John Mitchell, the attorney general, who did.

The system worked on our behalf and against the Nixon Administration. It took me almost a decade to acknowledge that." First, does Hayden think it morally acceptable for Stone to fool around with the truth to prove that other guys lie? And which Hayden are we supposed to believe? LEO RIFKIN History Department Cal State Long Beach Friends and Writers In response to D. P. Harrison's Counterpunch, "Writers Are There if Studios Only Look" (Dec. 2): For the record, "Thelma Louise" was written by the then-un Mick Jagger plays a futuristic bounty hunter in "Freejack." SAN DIEGO COUNTY 1 into the past for their handiwork.

But, of course, there's a glitch this time out. Alex escapes before the transfer occurs. On his trail is the leather-corseted biker bounty hunter Vacendak, played by Mick Jagger in full sneer. Despite all the techno-babble rigmarole, "Freejack" (rated for language and violence) devolves into a standard -issue chase picture'. The script, by Steven Pressfield, Ronald Shusett (of "Total and Dan Gilroy, doesn't have the wit or the ingenuity that might give a twist to all the hardware wars.

What keeps you watching despite everything are the pyrotechnics of director Geoff Murphy, a New Zealander who made his Hollywood debut two years ago with "Young Guns 2." Murphy, whose 1984 epic "Utu," about a Maori revolt and one of the greatest rarely seen movies of the past 20 years, has an extraordinary feeling for pacing and movement. He also has a feeling for grand-scale drama. He's one of the few living directors who can work on a broad canvas without skimping on the brush strokes. His work in this movie is the only reason to see it, and yet his finest talents are not on IjMk America's in Love with My Girl! 1 my i i By PETER RAINER TIMES STAFF WRITER The tone of Hollywood's futuristic fantasies can be summed up: We have seen the future and it is really grungy. From "Blade Runner" to "Total Recall" to the current "Freejack," the world view is not pretty.

We're treated to a gloppy, punctured-ozone-layer universe crawling with freakoids and punkettes. As with most cautionary fables, the dangers are all rooted in urban decay. Cities are the festering souls of future rot and technology exists to promote decay. Most of these techno-grunge-fests are triumphs of production design at the expense of all human feeling. The soullessness is total.

"Freejack" (throughout San Diego County) is an attempt to insert a sliver of humanity into the genre. Instead of casting a Schwarzenegger type a performer whose bulk and musculature is already sci-fi-ish this film stars Emilio Estevez. Skittering around the dark-lit byways of a garbagey metropolis, circa 2009, Estevez has a scaled-down humanity that makes you fear for him. What he doesn't have is the kind of 'Star presence that might make you root for him. It's a difficult hat trick: How do you create a "normal" character with heroic qualities? A residue of Brat Pack still clings to Estevez's outerware in this film.

As a result, we're no better off than we were with other futuristic fantasias. We are once again left staring at the production design, and the design and special effects in "Freejack" are often uncomfortably cheesy. The film's premise is promising but undeveloped. Alex Furlong (Estevez) is a racing car driver who is snatched from death moments before his speedster explodes and is transported to 2009, where his body will serve as the repository for the electronically implanted brain of another, recently deceased man. In this brave new (polluted) world, it's possible to achieve immortality by transferring one's mind to a healthy body; but few healthy bodies exist, so scientists have devised a way to reach back NOW SHOWING AT THESE SAN DIEGO THEATRES AMC SANTH VILLAGE 8 9625 Mission Gorge Rd.
