LAS VEGAS Imperial has system for hearing-impaired Center-Strip Location 2,700 Luxurious Rooms Suites Grand Array of Fine Dining Race and Sports Book World-Famous Antique Classic Auto Collection Award Winning Hit Show, "Legends In Concert" Free Gaming School Health Fitness Center The Imperial Palace Hotel Casino has added an audio system that aids hearing-impaired people in experiencing the sounds of the "Legends in Concert" show. The Imperial Palace says it is the first hotel in Nevada to equip its showroom with a communication system called the Sennheiser Infrared Assistive Listening Device. The system enables hearing-impaired persons to clearly distinguish the sounds around them through headphones that contain a receiver and an adjustable volume knob. The sounds of the show are picked up and transmitted to the headsets by infrared signals mounted on each side of the showroom and above the stage. The lightweight headphones resemble the Walkman radio headsets.

They can be used anywhere in the showroom and do not affect other patrons. Hearing-impaired persons attending the "Legends in Concert" show can obtain a listening device from the maitre 'd upon entering the showroom and return it after the performance. Similar systems are now common fixtures in Broadway theaters and most major concert halls and auditoriums. The Sennheiser communication system was officially introduced at the "Legends in Concert" show in the Imperial Theatre on Nov. 19.

"It was beautiful," said David Schroeder, who is deaf. "We can finally hear the sounds both musically and vocally." The installation was in conjunction with the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was passed in July, 1990. The act was designed to give the disabled equal employment opportunities and make businesses more sensitive. It does not spell out specific guidelines for listening devices.

The deadline for making public transportation and accommodations more accessible to the disabled is jan. 26. The Imperial Palace was named the national 1990 Employer of the Year by the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. For more information, call (702) 794-3114.
