Monahan, the longtime Bristol coach and athletic director, and McHugh, retired football coach at Xa-vier High in Middletown, are past presidents of the Connecticut High School Coaches Association and the NHSACA. Monahan, 78, who now lives in Southington, and McHugh, 57, who is president of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, will be honored at the NHSACA's convention in Sioux Falls, S.D., June 26. The NHSACA Hall of Fame was established last year when the convention was held in Cromwell.

Connecticut's first inductee was the late Joe Fontana of Southington, who along with Monahan and several others were instrumental in forming the state coaches association. Monahan, who retired in 1979 af-tef more than 40 years in education, was'CHSCA president in 1959 and a longtime treasurer. He was NHSACA president in 1974 and was a member of the executive committee, and board of directors of that group. McHugh, who coached Xavier football to a 20-year record of 152-36-6, was president of the CHSCA in 1973 and the NHSACA in 1980. Both men have also received the NHSACA's Dwight Keith Award, the association's highest honor for "I expect The Greater Hartford Track Meet is May 17 at 10 a.m.; the site has been changed from Wethers-field to the Lindy J.

His teams won 205 games and seven FCIAC and four Class LL titles. Ornato's replacement is Rich Albonizio, who coached Trinity Catholic since 1990 (39-34 record) and played for Ornato at Port Chester (N.Y.). Alboni-zio's 1993 Trinity team was 10-1 and won the Class title.

David LaPorte was named varsity girls soccer coach at Rockville, replacing Don Saya, who stepped down after four years. After the walk-a-thon, the team will hold a calisthenics session in front of the CVS Pharmacy on Buckland Road. "It's a way for the kids to promote team unity and get more interest in the football program," said Peter DiPaolo, father of tri-captain Matt DiPaolo, who along with fellow captains Adam Ball and Steve Santangelo will lead the team on a run to the pavilion at Nevers Park, where parents, friends and classmates will gather. ed to do fair distinguished service, and Gold Keys from the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance. at the Hartford Public library and meet director Lindy Remigino will accept hand-delivered entries. Also, Remigino said the sprint medley relay will be open to all states for boys and girls. Remigino said Saturday he has entries from 64 schools. "We usually get a lot of late arrivals," he said. Remigino also expects entries from 1996 double winner Shayla Wallace of Northwest Catholic-West Hartford (200 and 400) and 1996 State Open sprint champion LaTroy Oliver of Weaver-Hartford. "LaTroy is a good bet to dominate the sprints," Remigino said, "and Weaver's 4x100 relay should be provide strong competition for the New York teams." ly well, but at the same I was starting a lot of first-year players at key positions," Brookes said. "I wasn certain they were ready." GHTBL Hall of Fame Four Dlavers. a former manaaer and a sports writer will be inducted 1 to keep this pace. "Rob Waz at shortstop did a great job for us and held together what was a good defensive unit.

Joe Ferucd has replaced him and done a good job, but he needs time to break in." The defense hurt in a loss to North Branford Friday. Three unearned runs spoiled an 1 1 -strikeout performance by Prue as North Branford won, 4-3. It was also one of the few games in which the Cougars didn't hit. Brookes expected production from returning starters Matt Cabrai and Greg Annino, but Marchinkoski has raised his average from .240 ta" above .600. Brookes said Jon Todila-has also increased his "I'm looking to get a solid one; through nine just like everybody else," Brookes said.

"I really thinly we can get to the point where we have nine solid guys in the lineup? The fast start has H-K in the midV die of the race for the tournament. Morgan Clinton, North Branford, Valley Re gional, Old Lyme and Coginchaug. Durham are chasing four qualifying spots. 7J "The league is strong right now Brookes said. "There are four tpr; five teams that can beat each othej; at any time.

It just keeps coming, back to defense. We just need. to. play better if we are going to qualify for the Shoreline and if we are going to do anything in either tournament." so far, everytning seems tine, h-K is off to an 8-2 start and has a pitching staff the goes four deep. The staff starts with Tom Prue and Mike Corona. Corona was 9-1 last season and is 4-0 this year. "Corona has done a super job," Brookes said. "He's a real enthusiastic kid who loves to pitch and the team responds well when he is on the mound." Corona's strength is throwing strikes in any situation.

He pitched in H-K's first four games. "We used him any time we needed a kid to come out and throw strikes," Brookes said. "He's got an incredible ability to throw strikes and he wants to throw a strike on every pitch. We actually teach him how to pitch and when to miss." Prue was 5-1 last season and is 2-1 so far. Brian Marchinkoski and Ryan Kish round out the staff.

"I think our pitching depth is a real strength," Brookes said. "Having four pitchers in a school this size is a luxury." Prue has served an even more vital function by replacing Rice at catcher. "For the last four years I never had to worry about anybody running on us, Brookes said. "Prue has done a good job keeping the running game down, which is important in high school, but he's one of our pitchers and we're still looking for someone to catch when he's on the mound." The Cougars had one of the strongest defensive teams in the Shore-fine last season, but so far they have been inconsistent. "I'm not crazy about the defense," Brookes said.

"We are going to have to get better if we are going The 14th annual Connecticut Association of Schools and Connecticut Intorscholastic Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Awards will honor 317 student-athletes from 165 schools today at 5 p.m. at the Aqua Turf Club In Southington.
