The building, which is managed by CB Hampshire of New Jersey, is in a business zone. CB Hampshire officials were unavailable for comment about future uses of the WETHERSFIELD Kmart announced it will close April 30, forcing 50 employees out of work. The retailer has closed hundreds of stores in the past two years. Kmart officials say the closing of the Silas Deane Highway store is the result of a continuing evaluation of their stores' sales and profits.

"It comes down to profitability," said Kmart spokesman Dan Jarvis. "ff a store is profitable, it will stay open." The Wethersfield store opened about 20 years ago. Some of the local employees work full time; others have part-time and temporary positions. Jar-vis said employees who are laid off are encouraged to apply at other area Kmarts. Town officials were disappointed at the closing, but don't expect it to take too long to fill the property.

"We're sad to see Kmart leave," said Town Planner Stuart Popper. While she grappled with one of them, another pointed a gun at a man who lives in the house, prompting him to retreat to an upstairs bathroom. The woman was cut on one of foot while struggling with one of the intruders, Cooper said. The intruders fled after the shots were fired, Cooper said, and nothing was stolen from the house. Police say they have no suspects in an incident Tuesday on Woodlawn Circle in which four assailants are said to have burst into a house, assaulted a woman and fired two bullets through the door of a bathroom where a man was hiding. The small-caliber bullets narrowly missed the man, police said, and no one was seriously injured.
