"It's not your typical martial art where you pay a monthly cost and get a belt at a certain time," he said. "It's a lot more than that. It has a particular mind-set." Bando is a noncommercial and nonprofit activity, meaning the instructors and organizers charge students for only the amount needed to cover the necessities of training. The philosophy of bando centers upon reverence for dead veterans of all wars, which explains the timing of many of the sport's big yearly events.

This weekend's event in Glastonbury is timed to coincide with the Memorial Day weekend. Bando practitioners also hold tournaments and clinics near V-J Day and Veterans Day. Mary Mester, a Glastonbury resident, took up bando after watching her sister take the classes. She's now an instructor and a board member of the American Bando As sociation. "I was lured into it because it had such depth to it," Mester said.

"Because it's nonprofit, their main motivation in teaching is to carry on the art, not to make a living." The grand master. Dr. Maung Gyi, came to the United States in the late 1950s from Burma. He taught bando in the basement of the Burmese Embassy in Washington, D.C., while attending college, and went on to become a professor at Ohio University in Athens. He retired about three years ago, but travels to all important bando events nationwide.

He will attend the Glastonbury event, Martin said. People who practice bando pattern their moves after the attack styles of one of nine animals: bull, boar, scorpion, panther, cobra, python, tiger, viper or eagle. The local bando group, Greater Hartford Bando, is among the nation's most successful, Martin said. The moves in bando are more direct and forceftil than those in other martial arts such as judo or jujitsu.

Some aspects of bando involve person-to-person combat, and others a curved sword known as a kukri, which is carried on the left hip. "Technically, we don't consider it to be a martial We consider our system to be a fighting system with very direct moves, very direct purposes." said Michael Martin, past president of the American Bando Association, who is also its unofficial historian.
