8. Quick's decisive victory over Ri-shaad Bilimoria of India was surprising. They split four matches last year. Cowie was impressed with how the younger players on the team handled the pressure. "In the last couple of weeks the atmosphere on campus has been frightening.

Everyone talked about squash. Professors knew about us. It came up socially. There was tremendous pressure on us. And the wins kept coming." No victory got the crowd more juiced than Cowie's.

When he left the court through the glass door, he disappeared into a sea of open arms as the crowd chanted "We're number one. We're number one." Which the Bantams should be when the next poll comes out. But Trinity coach Paul Assaiante warned of the historic victory. "We'll play Harvard again for the team championship. Then we'll be the hunted." Harvard knows how uncomfort-.

able that can be. By WOODY ANDERSON Courant Staff Writer Trinity's Marcus Cowie put both hands over his mouth to smother a scream, then kneeled for several seconds, his head on the rug. He had just been told that his 3-0 victory over Harvard's Dan Ezra was the decisive one. For the first time, Trinity had defeated Harvard in men's squash. In a howling cauldron upstairs at Ferris Athletic Center, unbeaten Trinity upset Harvard 6-3 Saturday.

Harvard is defending National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Asso-. ciation champion. For Harvard coach Bill Doyle, a 1985 Trinity graduate, the defeat was difficult. He said it was his second loss in his six years as coach. Trinity is the first non-Ivy school to defeat Harvard.

"We're now on new ground," said Cowie, a sophomore from Norwich England, who accented his final two points by raising clenched fists to the wedged-in crowd of 1,500 which included his parents. It was perhaps prophetic that Cowie's victory clinched the team victory. It was Cowie who won the It's True: Football Outdoes Football Soccer Simulation Tops Gaming Poll CYBERSPORTS PAUL ROSANO True: Football is one of America's favorite sports. True: A football game is one of the most critically acclaimed computer software titles of the year. False: A game of American football is one of the most critically acclaimed titles of the year.

In a poll of 11 reviewers and editors from computer gaming sites on the Internet and The Courant, a football game was chosen as the best sports game of 1997. But it's not a game of American football "FIFA: Road To The World Cup 98," from EA Sports, a soccer simulation, as we say in this country, received 168 points, including five first place votes, to finish No. 1. That seems quite remarkable considering this country's resistance to making professional soccer a major drawing card. It doesn't seem to matter, however, when it comes to good game design and having fun on a computer.

In fact, just one pro football title made it into the Top 10 ABC Inter-active's "Monday Night Football 98" checked in at No. 8. After that, only three other football programs received any votes. "EA Sports' yearly update to their popular soccer series Is the best football game to date," said William Abner, editor of The Gaming Nexus (www.gamingnexus.com). It is, and more.

Of all the EA Sports titles that boasted yet more enhanced graphics than ever, "FIFA" combined those visuals with compelling game play, challenging artificial intelligence and an accurate feel for the sport Said Abner "The reason for the lack of a pro football game on my list is simple: The best game you can buy is still 'Front Page Sports: That appears true, although "NCAA Football 98," another EA NISRA individual championship last year, ending Ezra's two-year reign. "He was on top of his game and I wasn't," said Ezra, senior lefthander from London, England. "The, crowd played a part. We knew what we were up against" Last year Harvard defeated trinity 5-4 for the NISRA team championship, establishing Trinity's pedigree. And Trinity came into the match Saturday 14-0 and ranked second to Harvard, which was 5-0.

To help Trinity along, the home crowd brought its best voice. After seating on the large pyramid stand was taken, spectators had to sit on the floor practically nose-to-the-courts. Some printed "Go Bants" (that's short for Bantams) on their foreheads. And the school mascot showed up in his gaudy blue and gold chicken garb. One key Trinity victory was junior Charles Saunders' gritty 3-2 decision over Deepak Abraham of India at No.

4. "He would have had to taken my heart out to win," said Saunders of Haverford, Pa. "In that fifth game the crowd helped a lot." Other Trinity winners were sophomore Preston Quick (3-0) at No. 2, STATE COLLEGE HOCKEY had a goal and an assist as Yale (17-4, 12-2 ECAC Division I) defeated Colgate (14-8-2, 8-5-1) before a sellout crowd of 3,486 at Ingalls Rink in New Haven. Jeff Hamilton made 1-0 with 14:29 left in the first period off passes from Jones and Ray Giroux.

Jones made it 2-0 in the third period when he scored off a pass from Keith McCullough with 10:33 remaining. Alex Westlund made 32 saves for Yale. Wesleyan 4, Amherst 2: Chris Perry scored two first-period goals and assisted on the winner in the second period to lead Wesleyan (5-13-1) past Amherst (9-8-1) in Amherst, Mass. Perry scored his first goal 8 minutes into the game and added one 2:58 later. Perry set up Kevin Hardy BASEBALL UConn Defeats Connecticut College a special 50th anniversary section Friday.

A first look at the new site reveals a clean looking, easy-to-navi-gate format that gives users quick access to a wealth of information. The home page Includes a lead story, headlines, series information, schedule and links to the 50th anniversary home page. The anniversary page has its own set of links, a feature story and an interactive page, which will feature fan potts on such topics as greatest drivers and moments in NASCAR history. Web Links Charlie Pasteryak of Lisbon, a driver on the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour, has maintained a Web site (http:members.aol-,comccpmod5) for the past two years.

Speedway AD.Com, a motor-sports information resource Web site, selected Charlie Pasteryak Racing as its site of the month for January. In addition to bio information on Pasteryak, you can find a tour schedule, news, history and links to other racing sites The Waterbury Spirit of the Northeast League, an independent minor league baseball team, has opened a Web site (www.waterburyspirit-.com), which will provide fans with daily updates during the season and offer on-line ticket ordering for home games. The 1998 schedule and directions to Municipal Stadium are also available. SCOREBOARD Sports title, garnered some support, just missing the Top 10: "Madden 98," perhaps one of the biggest disappointments of the year, placed on only two ballots, with sixth- and lOth-place votes at that. EA Sports fared quite well with other titles, placing three in the top four and four in the Top 10: "NHL 98" finished third with 147 points; "NBA Live 98" fourth (122Vi); and "Triple Play 98," a baseball title, 10th (40).

Access Software's classic golf sim, "Links LS '98" placed second, 20 points in back of "FIFA." Completing the Top 10: Sierra had two titles, "Front Page Sports: Golf," sixth, and "FPS: Baseball '98," ninth; "Virtual Pool 2" that a sport?" asked editor Paul Hyman of Game Power, www.gamepower.com) from Interplay, was fifth; and Accolade's "Jack Nicklaus 5," seventh. While baseball didn't fare well, two text simulations, "Baseball Mogul" from Infinite Monkey Systems and Tippett Software's "Diamond Mind Baseball 7," came close to cracking the Top 10 in this age of highly graphical game design. Perhaps one of the most interesting results of the poll is that critical success and popularity are sometimes not related at alL "Trophy Bass Fishing," which was No. 1 on the sports sales charts for much of 1997, according to PC Data, picked up only one lOth-place vote.
