THE HARTFORD COURANT: Sunday, November 20, 1994 1 3 College ootbalD Yale at an advantage in defeating Harvard, 32-13 By TOMMY HINE Courant Staff Writer -BOSTON Five plays. Three touchdowns. Yale will take those kind of scoring drives any time. Get them against a one-dimensional team such as Harvard, and three touchdowns on five plays can be decisive. They were in Yale's 32-13 victory in The Game before 25,500 Saturday, and Harvard's all-run, no-pass offense couldn't answer.

The Crimson's best chance in the LI 1th meeting of the Ivy League schools probably disappeared a week earlier. Quarterback Vin Fer-rara injured a knee against Penn and couldn't play against the Elis, and backup Steve Kezirian wasn't the answer. "When this big black blob came out of the shadow, I took it and just ran with it." Yale again needed only one play to score, Hetherington's option pitch to Bob Nelson (18 carries, 1 12 yards, two TDs) around right end to make it 19-6. Snowden never appeared again. "It's difficult putting a true freshman in the Yale-Harvard game," Murphy said.

"This isn't the game where freshmen will get it done for you. "But at that point I didn't think we had anything to lose." Harvard cut it to 1 9-13 on Hu's 1 8-yard run at the end of a 76-yard drive, but Yale (5-5, 3-4) answered. After Nelson gained 44 yards on three carries, Yale faced fourth-and-13 at the Harvard 30. Hether Elis gained possession at the Harvard 39 after a short punt. On the third play, Keith Price scored from the 3.

"We were set up pretty well with good field position," said Price (18 carries, 45 yards, two TDs). "It was just a matter of blocking well. "We had the momentum then. We thought we were in control and just rolled with it." Early in the second half, Yale struck quickly again. Murphy turned to Snowden to start the half, but Snowden's first pass was incomplete and his second was intercepted by Garrick Cox and returned to the Harvard 11.

"I didn't see the ball," Cox said. "With the sun over that end of the stadium, the receiver stepped in and I went with him. being able to run the football didn't allow us to stay in the ballgame. Our strength was our balance, and today we didn't have all the pieces." Hu, a sophomore, ran for 145 yards on 36 carries to finish the season with 1,011 yards second to Jim Callinan (1,054 in 1981) in Harvard history. But Hu gained most of his yardage after Yale's special teams and quick-hit offense had done most of the damage.

After Harvard (4-6, 2-5) took a 6-0 first-quarter lead on Hu's 1-yard run, Jack Norris blocked a Crimson punt and Todd Imwold recovered at the 1 1-yard line. Yale quarterback Chris Hetherington needed only one play, rolling right for a touchdown and a 6-6 tie with 12 minutes, 52 seconds left in the half. Yale's defense then held, and the The victory improved Yale's record to 61-42-8 in the rivalry. Coach Carm Cozza is 16-13-1 in 30 years at Yale "They weren't the same ball-club," said Cozza. "You can't lose that kind of experience and talent.

"We knew they had an inexperienced quarterback with very little playing time, and we tried to keep the pressure on. With Ferrara in there, you couldn't get away with that." Kezirian completed only 5 of 17 passes for 22 yards. Freshman Jay Snowden threw twice and was intercepted once, leaving all the offense in the hands of tailback Eion Hu. "We're a different team than three weeks ago," first-year Harvard coach Tim Murphy said. "Only ington found tight end Dave Pry-byla open near the 10 and hit him for a first down at the 7.

One play later, Price ran in from the 2. "It was a perfect pass," Prybyla said. "I kind of misread it and it looked more difficult than it was." Harvard never again moved inside the Yale 40. When the Elis stopped the Crimson on downs at the Harvard 20 late in the game, Yale needed four plays to score on Nelson's 2-yard run up the middle. "I had a lot of fun today," Hetherington said.

"It means everything to beat Harvard. I enjoyed it." So did Cozza. "I told them to leave no regrets. To give it their best," he said. "And they did." I UCLA 31, No.

It was the best of both worlds for UConn's Brian Reid on Saturday as the senior split end led the Huskies to a 2 1-13 victory over UMass in the season-ending football game for both schools. Reid, a former high school quarterback from Richmond, caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter and threw for one from punt formation in the fourth to seal UConn's first victory in nearly a month. "The last time I threw a TD pass was in high school," said Reid, who had five catches for 74 yards.

"That was five years ago." UConn coach Skip Holtz, dripping from a post-game Gatorade shower, hadn't won since a 33-16 victory over Rhode Island Oct. 22. "First of all, it's great to win," Holtz said after the Huskies finished 4-7 in his first season as coach. "It seemed like an eternity. This is a huge win for our program.

It's the game we'll carry with us into next year." UMass finished 5-6. The Huskies might want to thank former Notre Dame baseball coach Pat Murphy for the victory. When Holtz was an assistant at Notre Dame, Murphy iised to bug him to put in a pass play from punt "I always laughed at him," Holtz said. "We actually put the play in about three weeks ago, but we never crossed the 50 yard line so we never had the opportunity. The whole key to the play is to make it look like a punt.

It worked. Holy smokes." With UConn leading 14-13 and facing a fourth-and-1 1 from the UMass 35 with 6 minutes, 45 seconds left, Holtz checked with his coaches in the press box and decided to go with a fake punt. "I think having punter Dave DeArmas hurt earlier in the game on a roughing the kicker play helped make the play work," Reid said. The play was called "overload left, fake punt." Reid ran on the field to the punter's position and the Huskies snapped the ball quickly. Reid lofted a high pass toward the end zone that flanker Monte Nowden ran under for the touchdown.

"I thought it was going to bring a little rain," Reid said. "It was a great call. We had nothing to lose." UMass coach Mike Hodges offered no excuses. "We knew what it We weren't fooled by it," Hodges said. "I thought we had it covered.

The next thing I knew, Nowden was running down the held all by himself. We just didn't make the play." Until that play, UConn seemed to be playing just well enough to get beat. After taking a 7-0 lead on a 29-yard pass from Zeke Rodgers (10 of 17, 150 yards, two TDs) to Reid, the Huskies fumbled on three consecutive possessions. The first fumble, by tailback Lenny Dandridge, was at the UConn 28. Seven plays later, UMass junior Rene Ingoglia (23 carries, 92 yards) scored from the 1 It was Ingoglia's 35th career rushing TD, tying a school record.

Rodgers fumbled at the UConn 22, but the Huskies allowed only a 35-yard field goal. Reid committed the third fumble after a 20-yard reception, but the Minute-men missed a 32-yard field goal try. The Huskies regained the lead early in the second half when Ingoglia fumbled at the UConn 46. Two plays later, Rodgers hit tight end Anthony McKinney on a 29-yard pass play, putting the Huskies up, 14-10. UMass closed to 14-13 with 10:54 left on a 24-yard field goal.

Reid's TD pass to Nowden put UConn ahead, 21-13. "They say you never forget your last game," said senior linebacker Paul Zenkert, who had 16 tackles. "I'm never going to forget this one."
