Items may be returned within two weeks with sales slip. Linen Barn Outlets are located at 665 Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook and 220 Indian River Road (off the Boston Post Road) in Orange. Old Saybrook store hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Two new books out this fall explain the intricacies of a Hindu system of philosophy based on the belief that we can improve our lives by rearranging the spaces where we live and work.

Vastu principles date back thousands of years to the Vedic civilization. Vastu is practiced widely in India, where there are vastu experts with weekly TV shows and well-known vastu consultants. The philosophy uses the five basic elements space, air, fire, water and earth to align spaces to maintain harmony with nature. Like feng shui, the Chinese art of placement, vastu teaches practitioners to examine their environments and make the most of cosmic influences on their homes. Feng shui, which has inspired harmony-seeking Americans to install fountains in their living rooms and hang mirrors over their stoves, is believed by percent off the lowest-ticketed price on selected kitchen, bath and bedding items, as well as giftware, home accessories and other household goods.
