Wide receiver Thomas Lewis underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot. He is expected Euro qualifier uncertain: A series of surprising results kept the suspense alive with two rounds of European Championship qualifying remaining. France registered the biggest victory margin ot its 91 -year history with a 1 0-0 rout of Azerbaijan, but still needs at least a tie against leader Romania next month to edge either Poland or Slovakia in Group I.

The Poles wasted home advantage against Romania, tying 0-0, while Slovakia stayed alive by virtually eliminating Israel, 1-0. In Group VI, four teams are chasing a qualifying berth behind Portugal. Austria's second successive 3-1 victory over Ireland pushed It into second place. But the Austrians must play Portugal next. Northern Ireland then hosts the Austrians in what could be a decisive final game.

The other sections look more straightforward. Spain and Denmark should advance from Group II and Switzerland and Turkey are safely through in Group III, although the order of finish is uncertain. The Czech Republic, Netherlands and Norway are still alive in Group V. Group VII features Bulgaria and Germany while Group VIII should belong to Russia and Scotland. Champion League begins: A jax -Amsterdam opera defense of Its European Cup title Wednesday against Real Madrid when the 1995-9S Champions League kicks off.

That Group match is one of eight games launching the first phase of the competition. Two teams from each four-team group qualify for the quarterfinals next spring. In Group A it will be Nantes-France vs. FC Porto-Portugal and Dynamo Kiev-Ukraine vs. Panathinaikos-Greece; Group Legia Warsaw-Poland vs.

Rosenborg Trondheim-Norway and Blackburn Rovers-England vs. Spartak Moscow; Group Borussia Dortmund-Germany vs. Juventus-ltaly and Steaua Bucharest-Romania vs. Rangers-Scotland; the other Group pairing is Grasshoppers Zurich-Switzerland vs. Ferencvaros-Hungary.

Staff and wire reports Deion Sanders appears headed for the Dallas Cowboys, a decision that could be set today. The Cowboys were so sure they were going to sign Sanders Thursday that equipment managers sewed his name on two jerseys. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones presented Eugene Parker, the agent for Sanders, a five-year, $20 million contract that would pay the unrestricted free agent cornerback at least $9 million in a signing bonus. The team was close to completing negotiations to restructure quarterback Troy Aikman's contract to fit Sanders under the salary cap. The Cowboys also were talking to the New Orleans Saints about trading defensive lineman Russell Maryland.

Such a trade would free about $1.8 million. Linebacker Darrin Smith, who remains unsigned and counts $425,000 toward the cap, also might become available. The San Francisco Giants said Sanders was on their charter flight to Chicago, where the team opens a series today against the Cubs. Sanders, 28, was the NFL defensive player of the year in 1994 although he played in 14 games after his baseball obligation. He had 37 tackles and six interceptions.

Brown returns to Lions: Five-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Lomas Brown signed a one-year, $2.7 million contract and will play for the Lions Sunday against the Vikings. Brown, the Lions' designated franchise player, held out of training camp and the opener. Jaguars release Cobb: Running back Reggie Cobb, who injured his right knee in the first exhibition game and was out nearly all of training camp, was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Cobb was replaced on the 56-man roster by running back Vaughn Connecticut's Newest Auto Dealership! CADILLAC Cadi a c. Staff and wire reports NORTHAMPTON, Mass. Mike Williams, who was kicked off the UMass basketball team last season, was ordered Thursday to serve a year of probation and pay back stolen money in a bad-check case. Williams, 22, who earlier called the case "a misunderstanding," admitted in Northampton District Court that the facts were sufficient to convict him. Without a formal guilty finding, Williams, a Weaver High graduate, was ordered to serve the probation and pay back money to settle charges of theft and forgery. Williams would not comment on the outcome of the case.

Authorities had accused Williams and Andre Burks, then a first-year guard on the team, of giving a $4,000 check in April to another UMass student, who deposited it and gave them that amount in cash. But the student was later told that the check was drawn on a closed account in a Virginia bank, according to authorities. 1995 SEDAN DE VILLE Carmine Red, Loaded. Stk. Coach's Comer rlVH Community Reinvestment Our women's soccer program is coming off a tremendously successful year in which we advanced to the NCAA National Tournament semi-finals (the final four) and finished strong, posting a 19-4-0 record. That NCAA finish was beyond our expectations. Our great finish was made possible by outstanding senior leadership and by the play of our talented freshman and sophomore classes. There is great excitement surrounding our program this fall. With several underclassmen having another year of experience behind them, they and our four seniors co-captain Ashley Paine (Wilton, CT), co-captain Christy Rowe (Apple Valley, MN), Amy Folan (Portland, ME) and Amy Schwarz (Portland, OR) are leading the way in 1995. Ashley, one of our strongest forwards, currently is sidelined with an injury.

She is very influential with our younger players. Christy has completely recovered from reconstructive knee surgery which forced her to miss last season. She is an explosive player up front who already has scored two goals. Amy Folan has improved greatly over her three years and she is a steady force in the backfield. Amy Schwarz is coming off a preseason foot injury and we are encouraged with her play.

Her effort last weekend against No. 5 ranked Portland was tremendous. We stand 0-1-1 on the season after a trip to the West Coast over Labor Day weekend. It's always been our philosophy that "to be the best, you must play the best," and for two consecutive years we have started the season with an away trip against some of the top competition on the West Coast. We fielded a young team, as four freshmen started for us in a 2-1 loss to Oregon State last Saturday, and three started in a 3-3 overtime draw with Portland.

Portland, which again will challenge for the NCAA title after advancing to last year's NCAA national semi-finals, has six players participating on the National and Junior National Teams. Our games against Oregon State and Portland will strengthen our team and prepare us for our much-improved BIG EAST and Northeast competition. BIG EAST women's soccer has been rated among the nation's top three conferences by Soccer America Magazine and the addition of Notre Dame and Rutgers adds to our credibility. Notre Dame, ranked No. 1 in many preseason polls, lost to North Carolina in last year's 1994 NCAA Championship Game.

We had a very promising start last weekend, and now we turn our attention to kicking off our home schedule at the Connecticut Soccer Stadium in Storrs. This weekend we host the UConnUmbro Classic. Tomorrow, Providence and Vermont meet at 1:00 p.m., while we face first-time opponent Wisconsin-Green Bay at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, in a pre-determined format, Providence and Wisconsin-Green Bay play at 12 noon, followed by the UConn-Vermont match at 2:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on game days.

Prior to our game Sunday, we will honor our 1994 NCAA National Semi-finalist Huskies with a pre-game ceremony before our 2:30 p.m. match. Hope to see everyone there!
