But to listen to Pavano is to understand why the Expos aren't worried. "It's pretty awesome, I guess," Pavano said as he watched a World Cup soccer game Tuesday aftemooa "Pitching against the guy I got traded for. It's ironic and pretty exciting.

But it's another start, too." It may sound trite when Pavano, 22, says he considers Pavano: 7 Starts By PAUL DOYLE Courant Staff Writer AVG AB HR RBI I. Consider what Pavano walked into. He was traded for one of the best pitchers in baseball and was touted as Martinez's replacement Tendinitis behind his right shoulder cut short Pavano's spring training and forced him to start the season in the minors. When he debuted last month, anticipation and expectations were high. Pavano's reaction? A shrug. "Not much fazes him at alL" catcher Chris Widger said "He's very mature.

He just goes about his business and doesn't seem to get too high or too low. So I can't imagine this start being any different for him." When Pavano (2-1, 3.89 ERA) arrived at Fenway Tuesday, reporters were waiting. Pavano answered a few questions but seemed distracted and somewhat annoyed. It was nothing against the media Pavano just isn't overly analyticaL "He just goes about his work," Expos pitching coach Bobby Cuellarsaid "He's very even. Nothing really gets to him.

You won't see him getting all worked up. Maybe inside he's anxious or nervous about tonight. But he won't show it" Pavano's makeup was always considered his best attribute as he rose through the Red Sox organization. It's one reason the rebuilding Expos were interested. But his physical skills most notably his 91 mph fastball have been a revelation; Attitude aside, Pavano has proved he belongs in the majors.

He has pitched at least seven innings in four of his starts and the Expos are 6-1 in his starts. Pavano's victories were against Schilling and Mussina His only poor outing was against the Blue Jays, when he allowed six hits and four runs in three innings. "But even in that game, he wasn't bad," Widger said "His stuff was good. It was one of the games where there was a few bloop hits. He wasn't hit hard The good thing was, he forgot about it as soon as he left the game." Said Pavano: "I feel like I belong up here, but I know I have a lot to learn.

There's still work to do. I just want to keep going out there and getting experience." As Pavano sat in the dugout Wednesday, Martinez was interviewed on the field When Martinez finished talking about making the All-Star team, he walked into the dugout and shook hands with Pavano. Martinez said he wants Pavano to do well "He was traded for a Cy Young winner," Martinez said "There's pressure right there. I hope he does better than me in Montreal." ans manager Mike Hargrove on Wednesday, his attitude did not change. "It doesn't matter to me," Garciaparra said.

"Why worry about that stuff? I don't go out there and play to make an All-Star Game. you're on this level, in this league, you're already an All-Star." Garciaparra is hitting .314 with 11 homers and 48 RBI better mid-season numbers than last season (.291, 13, 48), when he was selected for the team. But Hargove selected his shortstop, Omar Vizquel, and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter to back up Alex Rodriguez. "Last year was a great experience," Garciaparra said. "I enjoyed it But it doesn't bother me at alL It really doesn't mean anything.

If you have five All-Star guys on a team, it doesn't mean you're going to win the World Series. That's the most important thing for me." While Garciaparra was left off the team, the Red Sox had three players selected: first baseman Mo Vaughn, and pitchers Pedro Martinez and Tom Gordon. It's doubtful Vaughn will participate because of a strained right hamstring. "My inclination is to stay here and get treatment" Vaughn said. "I just want to be ready for the Baltimore series after the break." But Vaughn, a two-time All-Star, took special joy in being selected this season as he is stuck in prolonged contract negotiations with the Red Sox.

"It's nice, especially after all the stuff that went on in the winter," Vaughn said. "I heard so much criticism over the winter To make the team is great" Martinez, who has been on the National League All-Star team the past two years, is a candidate to start for the AL. "That would be a great achievement" Martinez said. "That would mean a lot to me. I'm just honored to be picked.

It's a special feeling." Leyland Picks 5 From '97 Champs Combined Wire Services Five members of Florida's 1997 World Series championship team, all traded in an off-season payroll purge, were picked as National League reserves Wednesday for the All-Star Game at Coors Field in Denver on Tuesday night Florida manager Jim Leyland selected Moises Alou (Astros), Kevin, Brown (Padres), Robb Nen (Giants), Gary Sheffield (Dodgers) and Devon White (Diamondbacks). They'll join Edgar Renteria, the lone representative from the 1998 Marlins. "Well, you see those guys scattered around all year, and it will be good to see some of them again," Brown said Wednesday after beating Oakland for his 10th win. "That says a lot about what could have been, but that's past now." Mets pitcher Rick Reed (9-5, 2.71 ERA), a replacement player three years ago, was named to the NL staff "The road that I've taken to get where I am right now has been a long bumpy road but they always say hard work pays off and it has paid off," said Reed, who joins Mets catcher Mike Piazza, voted a starter. Leyland did not pick Cubs rookie phenom Kerry Wood, who tied a record this season with 20 strikeouts in a nine-inning game.

"I wasn't expecting to make it" Wood said. "Maybe next year." Among other notables missing from the NL is Cardinals outfielder Brian Jordan, the NL's leading hitter at .347. "What are you going to do?" Jordan said. AL manager Mike Hargrove of the Indians selected three of his players as reserves: pitcher Bartolo Colon, catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. and shortstop Omar Vizquel will join Cleveland first baseman Jim Thome and outfielder Kenny Lofton, both elected as starters.

Vizquel, who has won five straight Gold Gloves, is one of 14 AL players making their All-Star debut Four Atlanta Braves were picked as reserves, giving them the most All-Stars with six. Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux were selected for the pitching staff, Javy Lopez will be a backup catcher and Andres Galarraga will be a backup first baseman. Walt Weiss was elected to start at shortstop and Chipper Jones was voted the starter at third. San Diego will have five on the team, including pitchers Andy Ash-by, Kevin Brown and Trevor Hoffman. Greg Vaughn was selected as a backup outfielder and Tony Gwynn was voted to start Pitcher Rolando Arrojo of Tampa Bay and Oakland outfielder Ben Grieve, the only rookies selected, are on the AL team Gordon will be making the first All-Star appearance of his 10-year career.

He was a starter and middle reliever until last last season, when the Red Sox made him a closer. In his first full season as a closer, he has 24 saves. Gordon said he has been thinking about being selected the past few weeks. And it's no coincidence he has struggled recently. "I've kind of started to lose my focus a little bit because I've heard so much about the All-Star team," Gordon said.

"I'm just glad this is over with." But the good thing is that the shoulder feels good and usually gets loose. I'm happy with the first half." Saberhagen had room to adjust against the Expos, as the Red Sox had 12 hits but left 10 runners on base. They have stranded runners in 16 consecutive innings for a total of 24 left on base. But they gave Saberhagen a lead They took a 1-0 lead on Nomar Garciaparra's infield single in the first It extended his hitting streak to a major league-best 22 games.

The lead grew with one in the second three in the fifth and one in the seventh. Reggie Jefferson, starting at first in place of Mo Vaughn (right hamstring), was 3-for-5 with two doubles. John Valentin also had two doubles, While Darren Lewis and Garciaparra had two hits each. Meanwhile, Saberhagen got better as the game wore on. His shoulder got loose and his delivery was smooth.

"He's been very important" manager Jimy Williams said "He's shown perseverance and desire. His mindset has been the key." In spring training, the team's biggest weakness appeared to be its lack of pitching depth. After Martinez, there appeared to be a void in the rotation. But Saberhagen has become a solid No. 2 starterand without him, the Red Sox would not be contending for a playoff spot "We've got a lot better pitching," Saberhagen said "Pedro has made a big difference.

I'm back pitching. All the way around the pitching is better."
