"Because I love it," says Dina Merrill. "Because it's a challenge.

Because I think it's good for me and good for my family. I used to have a great problem convincing producers that I really wanted to work. I'd try out for a part and they'd say, 'Oh, you're not I think I am finally winning them around to the fact that I am serious." fact is that she is as enthusiastic about her career as any strugglinj starlet. And she has been parlaying one important film after another--from "Operation Petticoat" to "The Sundowners" to "Butterfield 8." Now she's here to play Burt Lancaster's wife in "A Matter of Conviction." She is a granddaughter of Charles Post, founder of the Post breakfast food industry of Battle Creek, and the daughter of four times married Mrs. Herbert May, formerly Marjorie Merriweather Post, a leader in Washington and Manhattan society.

Her father is E. F. Hutton, retired Wall Street broker. Before she came here three years ago to do her motion picture, "Desk Set," the 5 foot 1 inch slim blond's patrician features had frequently decorated the covers and pages of such magazines as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. She was a favor- ite of fashion editors and designers, and was called one of the country's best dressed women.

But from childhood, Dina (real name, Nedenia) longed to act At 18 she was in her first Broadway play, "The Mermaids Singing." Then Stanley Rumbough an heir to the Colgate soap a Yale graduate and marine corps flyer, returned from World War II. They were friends as school children. They fell in love, and in March, 1946, were married. Today, they are the parents of three children, Lee 12, David 10, Nina 7. After her marriage, Dina gave up acting, and did not resume it until after she became the mother of two boys.

I asked how an international film schedule fitted in with home life. "Surprisingly well," she said. "If it didn't, I wouldn't do acting. But I've been lucky. Even though I've had to come out here go to Key West and Australia for pictures, I've never had any really absences from home.

"I think it's good for all of us. I think families should take vacations from each' other now and then. Absencf does make the heart grow fonder. When I come back, my children appreciate me more. "You have more appreciation for people when you don't see them every day, year in and year out.

"I'm more appreciative of what I've got, too. When I go back, I realize again how handsome my husband is and how nice my children are. "My husband doesn't seem to mind my working. In fact, after I've been home a few weeks, he realizes what it is to have a bundle of nervous energy on his hands. He asks me if I couldn't go find an acting job somewhere." It wasn't always that way.

She had dabbled in acting before her marriage but he enforced her retirement. "I always figured the man who would make me quit acting was the one I should marry," she explained. "Others tried. My husband succeeded." She became a full-time, wife and mother, but her husband mellowed about acting over the years through exposure to her theatrical friends. When Dick Powell went east to make his TV acting on the Kate Smith show, he suggested Dina, an old friend, play opposite him.

Her husband assented. She began studying and doing small parts. A 10-minute role in "Time Of Your Life" with Jackie Gleason got her a Jerry Lewis film and two other pictures. Now her career is booming. Inevitably, she is compared to Grace Kelly.

Her reaction? "I don't mind, since Grace is no longer acting. It happens to any new actress who is blonde and tall. "Now if they compared me to Marilyn Monroe, who is still in the business, might object But I don't think that is likely." PAGE 24 TUCSON DAILY CITIZEN SATURDAY, JULY i6, i960.
