By Barbara Caywood FLORIDA TODAY It was a long time coming, but Astronaut's Donnie Hill finally conquered the elusive 14-foot height in the pole vault Thursday at the North Cape Coast Conference Qualifying meet Hill, a senior who moved up to 13-6 several weeks ago, actually achieved two new heights.

He went needed three tries to clear 13-9 for the first time, but easily topped 14 feet on the first attempt. "I don't think it was mental," Hill said. "I was trying too hard and running too fast but I relaxed down the runway on 14. I'm satisfied for now, but it's about time to go for that school record (14-6) that has been around since 1978." The top seven finishers in each event Thursday at Astronaut High School qualified for next week's Cape Coast Conference meet at Merritt Island. The South CCC Qualifier is today at Vero Beach.

Merritt Island senior Penny Jordan dominated the field events, winning the long jump, triple jump and high jump. "This is my second year of track, but I'm really trying more now since I'm a senior," Jordan said after jumping a personal best 33 feet, 8 inches in the triple jump. Astronaut junior Sam Henderson was a double-winner, capturing the discus and shot put. "I feel like I'm peaking at the right time and that's important because I want to go into next week's conference meet feeling positive," said Henderson, whose 48-1 12 shot put was a PR.
