MD12 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Thursday, February 4, 1993 Police Blotter Athletes of the Week Shopping Center. Upper Darby After shots were fired outside a McDonald's restaurant. 133 S. 69th Stat 6:07 p.m. Sunday, charges of making terroristic threats, harassment, i vi Chris Hoyle men thai came out nervous for a basketball game for the first time in a long time last Tuesday.

Her family was in the stands. Her friends. The school principal. It was supposed to be her big day the day she was poised to become the third Chichester female player to score 1,000 points in her career. One small problem her nerves affected her usually reliable shooting touch.

"I was all nerves," Blumenthal said. "In the halls at school, everyone was asking, 'How many points do you And then I get to the game and everyone's there waiting for me to score. And it wasn't like all I needed was one basket." In fact, she needed 24 points to reach 1,000. After shaking off her nerves, which caused her to miss her first four shots, she really got it going, scoring 30 points to lead the Eagles to a 60-32 victory over Academy Park. Blumenthal reached the mark on a backdoor layup with 7 minutes, 53 seconds left.

The game was stopped. A plaque was presented to Blumenthal. But the celebrating didn't stop there. After the game, she went out to dinner with her friends and yes, it was their treat. Blumenthal is hoping to get a little more lucrative free ride next year a college scholarship.

She certainly has an impressive resume. As a freshman starter, she averaged 13 points and six rebounds per game. As a sophomore, despite having to wear a harness on her dislocated left shoulder, Blumenthal again posted big numbers, scoring 17 points per game. This season, she has continued to flourish, averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds per game. Those seemingly once-in-a-lifetime shots. The halfcourt shots to beat the buzzer. The holes-in-one on the golf course. In the past year, Haverford High's Chris Hoyle has seen shots like that too. The difference? He's the one who has made them.

Last summer, Hoyle one of the state's top high school golfers fired a hole-in-one on the 190-yard fourth hole at Llanerch Country Club. The strange part was that Hoyle was the last to know. "The pin was tucked in a way that you couldn't see it from the tee," said Hoyle, who finished seventh at the district tournament and 14th at the PIAA state golf championships this past season. "So I was surprised when I walked up to the green and couldn't find my ball. I didn't know until I got there that I had hit the shot." The same can't be said for Hoyle's latest amazing shot.

This time, he saw the whole thing. And he had a lot more folks to celebrate with. With three-tenths of a second left on the clock, Hoyle banked in an 80-foot, one-handed heave off the backboard to give the Fords a 56-53 victory over Conestoga last Friday night. "I figured we were going into overtime, so I just caught the in-bounds pass and threw it," said Hoyle, who is averaging 18 points per game. "It got about halfway and I started to think that it had a chance to go in.

When it went in, I just said, 'Holy Then I turned to the referee to make sure it counted. When he signaled it was good, I went nuts."
