uth MJ GREAT MONTH 3 siua By MILDRED MARTIN The adventures of a 7-year-old who runs away to Coney Island after, as he thinks, killing his big brother, are winningly, if somewhat lengthily, set forth in "Little Fugitive," at the Studio. Turned out in its entirety by a group of talented amateurs, head ed by Morris Engel, Ray Ashley and Ruth Orkin, the film is rich in humor and understanding. Psychologically sound, it is also pic-torially devastating' with its un-glamorized glimpse of Coney Is land swarming beach, its conces sions, the uninhibited behavior of holiday-makers jammed together in search of escape from the sweltering city. STICKS TO SUBJECT But while "Little Fugitive" paints an amusing cross-section of humanity in wholesale lots, it sticks firmly to its subject a little boy scared into flight, unrepentant, fascinated by the big, crowded playground in which he finds refuge. Once at Coney Island, our pint-size hero apparently forgets his reason for being there.

Instead, in hedonistic glee, he investigates the entertainment offered, sampling everything from cotton candy to hot dogs, pitching balls, having his picture taken, riding the merry-go-rounds. With a passion for horses, Joey only discovers the pony ride when his money $6 left by his mother for the boys when she is called away by illness is gone. And so, the practical young man starts collecting pop bottles, raking in enough refund nickels to buy himself so many two-for-a-quarter pony rides he arouses the interest, CAST Of THOUSANOS Tliis Is his FUNNIEST-EVER ARCADIA Crckl AND IVMT II no, SAT aatlf 1. attttilt! SHOWS How Joey's brother, Lennie, learns the whereabouts of the fugitive he and his pals so cruelly got rid of, and how he manages to re trieve him before their mother gets home is matter-of-factly, rather than dramatically, detailed. "Excellent Ccmdv!" STARTS TODAY "Oi cuCCD Xwith Substitute, elephants for soldier ants, Ceylon for the South American jungle, add' a few eerie overtones for confusion's sake and, in "Elephant Walk," at the Stanley, you have practically a twin of "The Naked Jungle." Here once more is the proud plantation owner with his palatial dwelling, the imported bride, the misunderstandings at length re solved by calamity and destruction, Whereas hordes of ants ate Charlton Heston out of house and home, a herd of stampeding elephants accomplishes the same result in the new film. It must be admitted sympathy is on the side of the elephants since planter John Wiley's pig-headed papa knowing' ly built his house right in the mid' die of the jungle trail blazed by the beasts down to the water hole. PLENTY OF.

TROUBLE Unfortunately, old man Wiley lsn still around when the ele phants decide it's high time to take back what belongs to them. Tom Wiley lies peacefully (we guess) in his marble tomb in the garden, thereby leaving his almost equally stubborn son and fresh-from England daughter-in-law to make out as best they can. Coming on top of marital misunderstandings and a cholera epi demic, the Wileys aren't in very good shape to meet the trampling, trumpeting onslaught of the enemy. However, they escape with their lives and, with the house gone along with old Wiley's tomb and Mrs. Wiley's incipient romance with her husband's American over seer, seem likely to have a better chance for future happiness.

MISS TAYLOR CHARMS Elizabeth Taylor, wno replaced Vivien Leigh as the British bride when Miss Leigh became ill during early shooting in Ceylon, is both pretty and plausible. If you look sharp, however, you can still spot Miss Leigh in a number of the long-shots. Dana Andrews as the American Intruder does what he can for an uncertainly drawn role, while Peter Finch, the hard-drinking, egotistical heir to Elephant Walk, arouses little more than irritation. Abraham Sofaer, Heston's No. 1 boy in "The Naked Jungle," appears in a Ceylonese translation of virtually the identical part.

Filmed in Ceylon and Hollywood, directed by William Dieterle from John Lee Mahin's script based on the novel by Robert Standish, "Elephant Walk" is atmospherical ly exotic and more than a little dramatically dull except for the elephants.
