In the Delaware Valley Track Coaches Association's Meet Champions at Franklin Field yesterday, Wilson set a record in the 330-yard intermediate hurdles and missed setting a record in the 110-meter lows by one-tenth of a second. "I was going after it," he said later, "but I tried too hard and messed up my steps. I would have gone a lot faster, but I messed up my steps because I felt so strong." Wilson ran the 330 yards (some events in this meet are in yards, some are in meters) in 37.5 seconds. That set a meet record, breaking the 37.6 standard set in 1975 by Pennsbu-ry's Bill Austin. He won the 110 meters in 13.7, a tenth of a second off the record held by Franklin's Carl Namons.

"After I set so many records I don't think about them anymore," said Wilson, the Track and Field News Athlete of the Year for the indoor scholastic season. "I just want to do my personal best. Right now I'm aiming towards college (Villanova). Wilson was seventh of the eight finalists in the 330s going into the final turn, but made up yards of territory in the inside lane. "I had a lot of confidence," he said.

"I knew it was just a matter of time before things came together. It's was a thing where I knew I had a lot of competition. I knew I had to run." Mark Dickerson of Willingboro, N.J., and Willie Guess of Overbrook both ran 38.6 to push Wilson to the record. Other than Wilson, and a double win by William Tennent's Dan Friedman in the shot put and discus, the meet was largely dominated by South Jersey athletes and schools. After the obligatory half-hour delay due to drenching rains (all track meets in the Delaware Valley this spring have been interrupted by rain), Jersey athletes proceeded to steal the meet from Pennsylvania.

Rich Caton of Woodbury set a record in the 800 with a 1:52.2 clocking, Carl Lewis of Willingboro set a record in the 200 with a 20.9, Mike Mantini of Gateway won the mile in 4:12.9, Steve Thompson of Brick Township won the two mile in 9:11 9 and Toms River South won the Newcomb PRINCETON, N.J. Cherry Hill East's tennis team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Glen Ridge, 3-2, yesterday, capturing the NJSIAA state public school championship. East (22-0) got a pivotal victory from team captain John Newcomb at third singles to start the comeback at Princeton's Jadwin Gym. Newcomb "beat Andrea Fink, 6-2. 7-5, in a match that was ended by a 20-minute final game.

The first singles team of Andy Brief and Kerry Tucker won in straight sets, 64, 6-2, and the unbeaten second doubles team of Jeff Present and Wayne Streibich breezed, 6-0, 6-0, and sealed a place in this afternoon's championship final against Parochial winner Christian Brothers Academy to determine the best team in the state. "Their (Glen Ridge's) doubles teams were comparatively weaker," said Rest Coach Ralph Ipri. Doug Garis of Wissahickon won the pole vault with a jump of 14 0, beating Archbishop Ryan's Joe Sable on fewer misses.
