In last night's 12th annual Miss Bergman and Sir Laurence won Emmys in their American video debuts.

Both have previously won Oscars in motion pictures. Stack was honored as best actor in a series for his portrayal of Federal Eliott Ness in "The Untouchables," while Miss Wyatt won top series honors for her wifely role in "Father Knows Best," which leaves the air this season. The best dramatic series of the year award went to "Playhouse 90" which will not be seen next season. In a year when one-shot "specials" were the rage, Miss Bergman's performance last Oct. in "The Turn of the 'Screw" was rated highest for single performance by an actress.

Olivier. was voted this award for "The Moon and Sixpence" which was beamed Oct. 30. The 90-minute NBC colorcastly mixed comedy and music with the awards programs which saw winners in 22. categories, and a cial trustees award.

Spliced in among the presentations were songs and humor provided by Dinah Shore, Lawrence Welk, Jackie Cooper, Mahalia Jackson and Chuck Connors. The program was hosted by Fred Astaire (who won nine Emmys last year) in Hollywood and Arthur Godfrey in New York. One oddity of the balloting: Westerns, most popular programs in the rating systems, failed. to gain a single award. Comedy honors went to Art Carney, Jackie Gleason's ex-sidekick, for his uproarious antics in "VIP," another special.

Harry Belafonte captured an award for "Tonight with Belafonte," the outstanding variety show of the year. Presented the statuette by Astaire, the Negro actor-singer said, "I'm sorry Fred." He and the dancer were 'competing in the same category. Most outstanding variety show Emmy went to "The Fabulous Fifties," while Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra won the award for best achievement in music. CBS scored highest total in the awards race with 14 Emmys to its credit. NBC won.
