110' Friday, May 25, PhilaielphUlnqnlrelli Friday, May 25, 1979 Philadelphia Inquirer V' 'The Alien': The best horror film since The Omen' Movies A i L. 1 M' i MP. uy uesmond Ryan After the swashbuckling heroics tt Buck Rogers, Luke Skywalker and Lieu-tenant Starbuck, and the eerie benevolence of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Ridley Scott has crammed a lire-time of nightmares into "Alien" to sug. gest that somebody up there doesn't like us. The story is told in a terse and laconic style that establishes a rhythm in which Scott can bring the point of tension up to m.

rjv? a r5" i A 7 I -A. the monster's clutches firmly on its ear. Miss Weaver, a New York actress making her film debut, makes the most of the opportunity without overdoing it. She suggests toughness and fear in equal measure. Indeed, the only weakness of the otherwise admirable screenplay is its repeated suggestion that this decidedly unsentimental crew would care inordinately about the ship's cat.

What happens after the alien invites itself aboard is meant to be frightening, and saying anything more would spoil the movie's honed tensions. The editing, as it was in "The Omen," is razor-sharp and in perfect accord with the lean style of the film. Jerry Goldsmith, who is at home in this atmosphere, has written an ominous score. A ratings note: "Alien" has been given an a classification I agree with. There is a modicum of cursing, but the reason for the rating is the gory eruptions of violence that spatter the film.

"Alien" wants to be as frightening as possible, and, while it uses violence Judiciously, the effect is, to say the least, as alarming as Scott intended. This is, most decidedly, not a film for kids. original; the screen has always loved blobs running amok in the bowels of space ships. The difference is in the treatment. The most salutary achievement of the special-effects team led by Brian Johnson and Nick Allder is that they have made the alien and its home planet so different.

The primordial setting and the caves where the life form is discovered in an egg-like state are almost tangibly foreboding, and the growth of the monster to its full and terrifying dimension is superbly managed. And Scott, like Steven Spielberg in "Jaws," has the good sense to be sparing in showing this ghastly creation. The actors amid all this inventiveness are good enough to make their presence felt in what is not an actor's film. There are particularly forceful contributions from Yaphet Kotto, Ian Holm, Tom Sker-ritt and John Hurt, but the surprise of "Alien" the only pleasant surprise the movie has to offer is Sigourney Weaver. The screenplay by Dan O'Bannon doesn't have a spare word, and it is graced with a clever role inversion that neatly turns the tradition of the square-jawed hero and the woman screaming in 4 fc- .4.

Yapnet Kotto (left) and John Hurt awake from 'hypersleep' excruciaung pncn. i ne small army of technicians behind him have outdone themselves with macabre and startling effects. Through this collaboration, "Alien" establishes itself In several-areas: In sheer technical virtuosity, It is the best horror film since Richard Donner's "The Omen," and it Is a land-mark science fiction film. There Is no arch humor or campiness In "Alien." The crew of the beleaguered ship like the three men in a boat in "Jaws" are ordinary people, not space heroes. That is one of the many Intelligent decisions that make Scott's movie so exceptional "Alien" opens with the men and women of the space tug Nostromo hauling a vast cargo of mineral ore back to Earth as they eat and squabble about shares in the profit from the voyage.

The movie is set out as an elemental struggle against a monstrous life form of tinredeemed malevolence. In this, the film reverts to the venerable tradition of the science fiction classics of the Scott, hitherto known for the visual splendors of "The Duellists." is a born storyteller. When the ship's massive computer, Mother, directs the Nostromo to an obscure planet from which an intelligent signal is emanating, Scott docs not pause in the drama for any discussion of a historic moment. The five men and two women are immediately plunged into a life-and-death struggle. None of this, of course, is particularly Best bet iiey V.

ver srd Ian Holm in The Alien' Now the West never was is the subject 0 KM Brooks' riotous and often vulgar frontier parody, "Blazing Saddles." He has improved considerably since this scattergun effort, but individual scenes and lines remain hilarious and the film has a frantic vitality. The re if sue is at the KUlgram and other area theaters. New this week ALIEN See Desmond Ryan's review on this page. GAME OF DEATH The late Bruce Lee takes on Kareem Abdul Jabbar without a ladder in this film. Otherwise ot interest only to Lee's legion oi fans.

The film was put together with footage Lee left when he died five years ago. Gig Young, Hugh O' Brian and Dean Jagger can be found slumming In various parts of it. THE PRISONER OF ZENDA A send up of the oft-told Anthony Hope story ot mayheit) in Ruritania that never gets off the ground. It will please the large Peter Sellers market around the world since tt returns him to multiple roles, but since the film has not been remade In fun since 1952 the object of the parody will be obscure to many moviegoers. The screenplay and direction are both weak.
