Krigel, specialist in AIDS and cancer among the first to treat AIDS patients with chemotherapy and a biological agent called interferon. He also developed a now commonly used system of treatment and prognosis for patients with AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma. Dr. Krigel joined the Fox Chase Cancer Center as director of hematology in 1984, and performed a variety of novel clinical tests using biological agents to treat cancer.

He also was chairman of the quality assurance committee at Fox Chase. By Rich Ilenson IS0.11KER STAFF WRITER Dr. Robert Lowell Krigel, 44, who helped develop innovative techniques for treating AIDS and cancer patients, died yesterday at his home in Elkins Park. Dr. Krigel was diagnosed six months ago with angiosarcoma, an extremely rare cancer of the liver.

He was a specialist in cancers of the, blood and the immune system and specialized in treatments that would spur the body's immune sys tem to heal itself. He had been director of hematology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center since 1984, and in May 1993 he became the chief of hematology and oncology at Lankenau Hospital. really stands out abuut Rob was his extraordinary humanity, his concern for the well-being of others, and his selfless devotion to his work, his family and the people he cared about," said longtime friend and colleague I Dr. Krigel develop treatments. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in physical science. He earned his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City in 1975.

During his training as a resident physician in internal medicine at the University of New York's Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, Dr. Krigel was profiled in the New York Times for his efforts to achieve more humane working conditions for resident physicians. After studying oncology and hematology at New York University, he remained on staff there for two years. At NYU, he emerged as a leader in the clinical management of AIDS and AIDS-related cancers. In March 1993, Dr. Krigel moved to Lankenau to develop and expand its cancer program. A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Krigel served on the editorial boards of the National Cancer Institute's Physician Data Query, a computer database, as well as the journals Cancer Bioth-erapy and Journal of the National Cancer Institute. He also published more than 75 papers and scien tific abstracts on understanding, treating and preventing cancer.

He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Association of Cancer Research. He also was active in youth soccer. Dr. Krigel is survived by his wife, D. Bonnie Perlmutter; a son, Jonathan; a daughter, Anna; parents, Melvin and Sevi, and two brothers.

He and Gorky shared a studio and even collaborated on some paintings. Mr. Burkhardt moved to Los Angeles in 1937 and began painting nature still lifes as well as war images, carrying such titles as "War, Agony and Death," "The Death of Hitler" and "Hiroshima, Fear of Tomorrow." Some critics found his paintings, with their heavy use of red, threatening and suspected him of having communist sympathies.
