Death Notices Death Notices The Philadelphia Inquirer The company, now known as the Omni Hotels, was sold by the family in the 1980s. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth E. Thomas; a daughter, Julie; a granddaughter, three sisters, and five brothers. John Steinbeck 4th, 44, a writer and son of the Nobel-winning author of The Grapes of Wrath, has died of complications from back surgery. Mr.

Steinbeck died Thursday at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encini-tas, nursing supervisor Marlys Weberg told the Associated Press on Saturday. No other details about the surgery were disclosed. Mr. Steinbeck had been working on his autobiography. Legacy, in which he intended to examine the genetics of chemical addiction and trace what he believed to be his father's alcoholism to his own.

The younger Steinbeck had been a recovering alcoholic for three years. As a free-lance writer, he was published in many magazines, including the New Yorker. He wrote a non-fiction book, In Touch, about his experiences in Vietnam, where he em- braced the Buddhist philosophy. -Mr. Steinbeck was born in New York, where his father moved from California.

At 18, Mr. Steinbeck was drafted into the Army and completed a tour in Vietnam, part of which he spent as a combat reporter for Armed Forces Radio. He later returned to Southeast Asia to work as a free-lance journalist, primarily for CBS, in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Mr. Steinbeck was in Vietnam in 1968 when his father, who won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1962, died of heart failure.

Surviving: his wife, Nancy; two sons, Blake and Michael; a daughter, Megan, and a brother. Jim Jacoby, 58, internationally known bridge grandmaster, died Friday of cancer in Dallas. The son of Oswald Jacoby, himself a world-renowned bridge champion, he was 22 when he won his first national title in 1955 and went on to win 15 more. Eight years later, he represented the United States in the World Team Championship in Italy. Mr.

Jacoby won his third world title, the World Mixed Teams, in 1972 and his fourth, the Olympiad Teams, in Venice, Italy, in 1988. He was one of the first U.S. players to become a grandmaster in the rankings of the World Bridge Federation. Monday, Feb. li.

1991 Deaths elsewhere William "Bud" Dunfey, 6S, a member of an international hotel family and principal architect of the rebirth of the Democratic Party in New Hampshire, died Saturday of cancer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, N.H., the Boston Globe reported. Mr. Dunfey, who lived in Rye Beach, N.H., and worked tirelessly since the early 1950s to build up the Democratic Party in a state long dominated by Republicans, helped launch the careers of New Hampshire governors, members of Congress and scores of state legislators. But it was in the New Hampshire presidential primary in 1960 that Mr. Dunfey engineered the most memorable victory of his long career as a party activist the first-in-the-na-tion win for a fellow liberal Democrat with Irish roots, Sen.

He worked as a plant manager for Camden Lime Concrete Co. in Camden for 15 years before retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Pitman and St.

Margaret's Prayer Group in Woodbury Heights. Mr. Adams was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors: his wife, Alice: three sons, Robert Jr. of Pitman, William of Cape May Court House, and Thomas of Thorofare; three daughters, Gail Kennedy of Franklin-ville, Katherine Foody of Ewan and Barbara Zielsdorf of Mullica Hill; 12 grandchildren, and a brother, Albert Adams of Vineland.

Born in Florida, Mrs. Allison-Dobbins had lived in Mount Holly for 35 years. She worked as a telephone operator and receptionist for Gimbels in Moorestown for 16 years. She had also worked for the Reliable Tire Co. Mrs.

Allison-Dobbins was a member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Tabernacle, and the Night Outers in Mount Holly. Survivors: her husband, James Dobbins; a son, Bryan Allison of Mount Holly; seven step-children; three grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; four brothers, Myrton Allen of Alabama, Wayne Allen of Fort Myers, Edsel Ailen of Labelle, Fla, and Jack Allen of Immokalee, and two sisters, Daisy Parsons and Billie-Ruth Gibson, both of Labelle, Fla. General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. DORIS VIRGINIA BROOME, 73, of Col-lingswood, died Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, Camden. She was a third-grade teacher for more than 40 years at the Collins Tract School in Pennsauken. When she retired in 1977, she was honored with a lifetime membership in the Collins Tract Parent Teacher Association.

She was also a member of the New Jersey Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Camden County Retired Teachers' Association. GEORGE J. BUCS of Roebling died Friday at the Poly Clinic Medical Center, Harris-burg, Pa. Born in Trenton, Mr. Bucs was a lifelong Roebling resident who owned and operated Bucs Exxon there for 40 years. He also formerly worked for John A.

Roebling, for 40 years and was one of the 12 original union organizers as well as a past treasurer of AFL-CIO, Local 21 10 of Roeb-'ling. He was a member of the Roebling Historical Society, the Knights of Columbus Council 570 of Bordentown, and the Knights of Columbus Bishop Griffin Assembly, 4th degree, in Trenton. Mr. Bucs was a member of the Holy Assumption Church, where he was treasurer of its Third Order of St. Francis and a member of its Holy Name Society.

He was a member and a past president of the William Penn Fraternal Organization and was a member of the American-Hungarian Civic Association in Trenton and the Lincoln Society of Florence. Survivors: his wife, the former Elsie Lukacs: a son, Dr. Roger G. of Hershey. a daughter, Sharon L.

Burke of Alexandria, nine grandchildren, and two sisters, Anna Gabor of Roebling and Sister Ger-maine of Allanmuchy, Warren County. 4-BJ "Bud was a man who was respected by everyone who knew him a soft-spoken, warm and witty man, and a wonderful leader." Peabody said. "Bud's way was to work quietly behind the scenes." A former member of the Democratic National Committee, Mr. Dunfey was Kennedy's New England coordinator in 1960 and played significant roles in the campaigns of Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 and Robert F.

Kennedy in 1968. An opponent to the Vietnam War, Mr. Dunfey was active in several international peace initiatives, and served as an alternative representative to the United Nations in 1979. He was deeply troubled by the Persian Gulf war, said a longtime friend, Jack Sanders of Hampton, N.H. Born in Lowell, one of the 12 children of LeRoy W.

and Catherine (Manning) Dunfey, Mr. Dunfey joined the S. Marine Corps in 1943 and served in the South Pacific as a sergeant. Mr. Dunfey and his seven brothers, whose grandfather emigrated from western Ireland, built a hotel and restaurant empire from a humble start at a Hampton Beach clam stand.
