In that year, the park had in addition to the Eight" and the carousel a toboggan ride, an open-air movie, a roller rink, a penny arcade and ballfields. There were at least six food stands and, at one of them, the nation's first ice cream cones were said to have been sold. One of the food stand concessionaires was a factory worker named Joe Figari. Over the years, he began buying up other concessions and, by the 1930s, he not only owned the park but also owned the factory he had worked in.

The park remained in the hands of the Figari family until the death of James Figari last year. DON'T MIS-STEAK 4 y- Er--- Big bands will sound in the parks A pair of big bands will, hopefully, not play up a storm in Camden County Parks this week. But play they will. The Eddie Shaw Band will be in Berlin Park, opposite the Farmers' Market, on Monday at 8 p.m. for a free concert.

And the Al Raymond Band will give a concert at the Cooper River Stadium on North Park Drive, Pennsauken, on Thursday at 8 p.m. That, too, is free. P.S. If you happen not to care for either of the above, you might head on down to the Haddon Heights Dell, Park Drive and Prospect Ridge Boulevard on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and practice the mummer's strut to the tunes of the Hegeman String Band.

There's no charge for that, either. Jam--, 1LU at the Fuh OFF $1 It was then that the Brookmyers and a friend, lawyer Michael Ranck, bought the park. Ranck later relinquished his interest to devote more time to his practice. They began by saving and restoring whatever they could. To their amazement, the carousel's steam calliope, installed in 1924, the 1913 aeroplane ride and the 1920 whip all could be restored rather easily.

The Wildcat, X-rays showed, would take more time, but could be repaired. They even found the original laughing record for the "Laughing Sal" statue. After a year of intensive work, the park opened May 19 and was immediately beset by misfortune. "Our attendance projections were destroyed," Parrish said, mentioning the Three Mile Island accident, the gas shortage and polio among the Amish. "I thought nothing else could possible happen, then it rained hard for the first seven days we were open." But things have improved markedly, he said, and the first-year attendance may yet reach the 250,000 originally projected.

"I'm optimistic because the people who have come have reacted so positively. It's like a step into a more peaceful and pleasant past." To get to the park, take Route 30 (the Lancaster Pike) to where it becomes Route 462 near Lancaster. Take that to Lampeier Road. Turn left at Rocky Springs Road and follow to the park.
