There arc several important reasons for this: a) vanity, b) earning a living, c) attracting members of the opposite sex. Mindful of (he needs and desires of the aging segment of our population--a segment which grows larger every year--the medical profession has perfected a relatively old technique for removing wrinkles. It's popularly known as "fare-peeling." But one of its leading practitioners, Dr. Samuel Ayres, 111, Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, scholarly physician of 42, refers to it as "Superficial Clicniosurgery." In a scientific paper anil exhibit at the recent annual meeting of the California Medi- cal Association in Los Angeles, he stressed the potential hazards of the procedure, em phasizing that face peeling can be both safe and effective in the hands of properly qualified physicians, but like any potent medical or surgical procedure, dangerous in the hands of the medically untrained. The procedure basically consists of a chemical, always an acid, applied to wrinkled, weather-beaten or s u n d r e n c h e d skin in a carefully controlled manner. The acid penetrates sufficiently to remove the epidermis, the nonsensilive outer layer of skin, as well as the uppermost dermis, which is the true skin. New skin grows back, bright pink at first, but gradually returning to a normal color in a few weeks. This new skin is more firm and of a much more youthful texture thnn the old.
