Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Wednesday, March 30, 1988 Page 15 Sports Ex-Reds' Slugger, Coach Dies CINCINNATI (AP) - Ted Kluszewski, the Cincinnati Reds' bare-armed slugger in the 1950s, died Tuesday night. He was 63. Kluzewski apparently suffered a heart attack and died at Bethesda-North Hospital in Cincinnati, according to the Thomas Funeral Home. "Big Klu" retired as the Reds' minor league hitting instructor! last year and had undergone bypass surgery after a previous] heart attack in 1986. Kluszewski, the Reds' first baseman from 1947 to 1957, was a four-time All-Star. He led the National League with 49 homers and 141 RBI in 1954, his best season. Kluszewski, recognized by his big forearms and large biceps, was one of baseball's most feared hitters in his prime. He had 279 homers with 1,028 RBI and a .298 average in his 15-year career and was enshrined in the Reds' Hall of Fame. He also played for two years with the Pittsburgh Pirates and for two years with the Chicago White Sox. He played his final season, 1961, with the Los Angeles Angels. In his only World Series, in 1959 with the White Sox, Kluszewski hit three homers and drove in 10 runs and batted .391. Los Angeles beat the White Sox in six games to win the Series. The Reds discovered Kluszewski at Indiana University, where he played football and baseball. The Reds had spring training at the university from 1943 to 1945. Kluszewski, who was born in Argo, 111., in 1924, drew attention because he was hitting line drives that broke through a wooden outfield fence. U.S. Files First Entry With Seoul SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The U.S. Olympic Committee submitted a preliminary plan Wednesday to send an 808- member delegation to the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, organizers announced. The Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee said the entry, which provides for 639 athletes and 169 officials, was the first submitted by a foreign country. One hundred sixty-one nations are scheduled to compete in the Games, which will run from Sept. 17.-0ct. 2. According to the entry, the United States will compete in all 23 official events except men's field hockey, in which it failed to win a berth. Also, 138 athletes will compete in track and field, 76 in swimming and 67 in rowing. The American delegation also includes 47 athletes and officials for the three demonstration sports — baseball, the Korean martial art of taekwondo and women's judo. The deadline for preliminary team entries is May 17 and the deadline for final entries by name is Sept. 2, organizers said. Soldier Field Soon To Be Souvenirs CHICAGO (AP) - The artificial turf at Soldier Field, on which ran Gale Sayers, Walter Payton and other NFL champions, is being ripped up by workers, on its way to becoming souvenirs. The turf, which has been in Soldier Field since 1971, will be replaced by the real thing for the 1988 Chicago Bears season. The Chicago Park District, which began removing the turf Tuesday, has not picked a marketing company to sell the souvenirs. But Ben Bentley, I spokesman for the district, says the park board is leaning to a Deerfield company, Sports) Graphics. Officials said the turf, to be I turned into items such as coasters, rugs and wall plaques, should be on the market before] September.
