In the annual Achievement Awards competition sponsored by the Bank of America throughout California, a contest judged not only on scholastic achievement but on citizenship, leadership, service, plans and ambitions, character and personality, cooperation, in group discussion, sound and logical thinking and facility in oral communication -- McGara- ghan topped all entrants in the math, and science section in the four-county area tests held recently in Garberville. In this area competition, students hailed from Del Nolle, Humboldt, Lake (Ore.) and Mendocino counties. With the winners of the three other sections of competition (fine arts, liberal arts and vocational arts), McGaraghan will go on May 11 to Sacramento to compete against the equivalent section-winners from the five other Achievement Awards areas that make up the "Northern Counties Group." All 24 finalists who compete in Sacramento in the final interviews will each automatically receive I'ho of a cash award of $150, signalizing Us area victory. The students w place first, second and third in each of the four fields in the final ests will additionally receive respective prizes of $1000, $500 and $250.
