PAGE 38 *Death squads 9 return to Rio RIO. DE JANEIRO, Brazil (UPI) -- Like a recurring nightmare or a cancer that cannot be rooted out, Rio's bloodthirsty "death squads" have returned. In January alone 32 victims were found sadistically murdered --^ their bodies beaten and burned with cigarettes before they were shot. Some had as many as 30 . bullet holes in them. Officially, police say the murders are the results of gang welfare. But veteran reporters say the killings have almost all the earmarks of old vigilante groups -- whose ranks included many off-duty policemen. In the 1960s and early 1970s, those vigilante groups meted out their own form of justice by killing hundreds of persons they believed to be criminals. the only things missing in the new wave of killings are the' brazen calling cards the groups used to leave on the bodies of their victims. The new, lower profile -the squads used to have "public relations officers" who called newspapers to report their latest deadly activities -- may be due to an effort by the upper levels of Brazil's government to stop the murders. A half dozen alleged "death squad" members have been convicted of murder and sentence to jail in the past year and another 14 go on trial this year.
