HAYS DAILY NEWS PAGE M December 23, 1976 Lucas, Malone Are Potent 1-2 Punch By CHRIS SCHERF UPI Sports Writer University of Maryland Coach Lefty Drlesell still dreams of what might have been in 1974 if Moses Malone and John Lucas had played together on the Terps' basketball team. Until this year it was all conjecture, but now Lucas and Malone have joined forces for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association and have lifted the Rockets into second place in the Central Division. Lucas scored 18 points and Malone had 17 points and 18 rebounds Wednesday night to lead the Rockets to an 111-90 romp over the Washington Bullets. Calvin Murphy added 18 points, TomjanovJch 14 and Johnson 13 for the Rockets and the Bullets were led by Elvin Hayes with 22. (UPI) — The operator of the Brass Rail Tavern said he hasn't decided whether to fight a court order closing the controversial bar, which the city alleges is a hangout for prostitutes and drug pushers. A temporary order closing the tavern was signed Tuesday by District Judge James Rexroad. The tavern will be closed until at least Feb. 8, the date set for a hearing on a permanent closing order, unless it is contested. Billy Jack Cherry, the tavern operator, said he has several lawyers, including one from the NAACP, investigating the case. He said he has not decided whether to contest the order. The City Commission held a 20-minute secret meeting Tuesday to review evidence which City Attorney Charles Hyter said would show the tavern is a public nuisance.
