YOUR MONEY'S WORTH Back Income Averaging Could Cut Your '68 Tax Investors Jittery Over Possibility of New Credit Curb INDEPENDENT (AM) Treasury Report WASHINGTON (API -- Il» cash WSl- lwi 01 Pie Treasury Ft. 24. 17W com- cd to Ftb. 21. 1953 dn dollars!: PRESS-TELEGRAM (PM^-C-? By SYLVIA PORTER (In collaboration with the Research Institute of America) If your 196S income was substantially higher than your average income for the past four years, you may have a major tax-saving opportunity. If you think this includes you, quickly check vour tax returns for the years 1964 through 1967. If your '68 taxable income was more than 133 1-3 per cent" of your average^ taxable jncpme for these past four years, you er. are, what kind of income you have been receiving, whether you have inherited property, and so on. If your potential tax saving from income averaging is large enough, get professional help in working out your figures. Last of a Series may be able to pay a lower tax for '68 than you otherwise wouli' owe. Without going into the brutal technicalities, here is how it could work. Say you are a single man who had a $6,000 average taxable income for the years '64 through '67. In '68, you got a better job, received a bonus and other benefits -- and your '68 taxable income jumped to S15.000. IF YOU DIDN'T have income averaging, your '68 income tax would be S4.235.50. But because you can use income averaging, your tax can drop to $3,859.25. You can save $376.25 just by computing your '68 tax in a somewhat different way. As a valuable and quick guide to whether income averaging can help you, 1 submit below a table prepared by the Research Institute of America which shows at a glance for various taxable income brackets whether (1) you can get any tax saving and (2) whether the saving is at least $100. This table is for your use if you are a married taxpayer whose entire income in the base years 1964-67 and in 1968 was ordinary income -that is, without any long-term capital gains, income from inheritance, gambling or other sources requiring special adjustments. The income averaging procedure can become exceedingly complex, depending on who you, the taxpay- IF YOU WERE the lucky winner of a free -- I repeat, free -- prize in 1968, you can use income averaging. According to the Treasury, a free prize is one for which you didn't risk any money. All you did was fill out an entry blank showing your name and address and the identity of the store where you got the entry blank. You cannot use income averaging for gambling winnings, such as state lottery prizes, race winnings, the like. You can't save taxes You need this '68 inc. There \s-as some feeling that the Bank of England's action would be the forerunner either to a boost in the Federal Reserve discount rate -- the borrowing rate charged member commercial banks -- or another hike in the prime bank rate, now at an historic high of 7 per cent following three increases since early December. The prime rate is the minimum rate charged top-rated business firms. * i * * DREARY news from the Paris peace conference on Vietnam also served to discourage traders. In the latct session at Paris, the Communists brushed aside the Allied protest over the current offensive in the south and lashed out at the Ni.xon Administration, claiming it is more stubborn than the Johnson Administration in intensifying the war. The New York Stock Exchange index mirrored a loss of 20 cents in the average common share price. The Dow Jones average of 30 blue chip industrials dipped 2.74 to 903.03.
