Health poorer in slums Tnfant mortality, ntlis from TH, violence hi«lier WASHINGTON (APU-A now study of 1!) of the na- linn's largest cities shows t h a t persons living in urban poverty areas/and particularly minorities, arc in sisnificantly'poorer health than those living in a f f l u e n t neighborhoods, the government said Tuesday. · The report by the National Center for Health Statistics found that slum dwellers had higher rates of infant mortality, illegiti- m a t e births, low birth- weight,.death from tuberculosis and violence, and less prenatal care. Said center director Dorothy Rice, "Living in a poverty area is shown to increase the odds against enjoying good health, anti being in a racial minority worsens the odds." TIIK STUDY, covering (he three-year period l%fl- 1071, classified an urban neighborhood as impoverished if 20 per cent or more of the residents had an annual income of less than -R7-I3 for a family of four. The cities studied were Atlanta, Baltimore, Buffalo. Chicago, Cincin- n a t i , Cleveland. Dallas. Denver. Indianapolis. I.os Angeles. Memphis, Minneapolis. New York. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh. San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. In general, the study found that poverty dwellers had death rates 50 to 100 per cent higher from accidents, suicide and murder, even though the jxn'erty population was ''younger.
