Foundation Dedication of a wildlife sanctuary early this year paid honor to- horticulturist Theodore Payne (above). (Continued from Page 6 merits. As a member of many stale, national and i n t e r national societies he has been the recipient of many awards for his work in conservation of native flora. For the past 20 years he has limited his business to an acre fronting on Los Feliz Blvd., the Theodore Payne Native Plant Nursery, growing native plants exclusively. H i s beautifully illustrated c a t a l o g i s a wild-garden guide, an "encyclopedia" of the native flora of the state. "But I'm getting too old for this work," he said, sadly, "so I'm t u r n i n g over everything 1 have to the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants. I will carry on in an advisory capacity and the foundation offices will be here u n t i l a p e r m a n e n t location is · selected." T H E FOUNDATION, incorporated as a n o n - p r o f i t organization in the slate, will carry on his work in conservation and in popularizing native plants. The necessary capital for the initial operation will be procured through the s a l e of tax-deductible memberships. "There are m o r e plants native to California than to any other state," Payne said. "They are needed for landscaping the great Freeway systems of the state, for the grounds o f - p u b l i c and industrial buildings, for campuses and home gardens. They are needed for erosion control, for use in water conservation. The demand is g r e a t but very little is available commercially." The Foundation will grow these plants, making t h e m available to everyone at reasonable prices, the proceeds to go back into the Foundation. Theodore Payne has sold his last acre. One day soon Payne's w e a t h e r e d little board-and-batten office will be gone from Los Feliz, with it his tiny potting shed, the cans of Fremont ia, Carpinteria, Ceanothus -- the worn bench u n d e r t h e Catalina cherry. But his name will live and his work, will go on. Busy Trinidad Trinidad, which has experienced a steady growth in tourism in recent years, is busy expanding its tourist plant, according to the Trinidad and Tobago T o u r i s t Board. The island's I n d u s t r i a l Development Corp. plans to spend $4,200,000 this year for expansion. Most of t h i s will be used for hotel development. The new Trinidad Hilton Hotel, slated to open sometime next season, will get some $3,500,000 for construction work this year.
