BuITzrn 16 Frld«y Evening. Nov. i, 1350 Casualties Up In M a l a y a n Jungle War . KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 3. (/P)-The casualty list is rising steadil) In the war-against Communist ter rorists in the federation of Malaya It's npt a one-sided picture, either The losses among British securit; forces still are running highe than those inflicted on . the Com munist bands. Total Communist casualties up to Oct. 1 were 2,720. The figur included killed, wounded and captured. .The terrorists have killed wounded 3,177 civilians, regular special and auxiliary police. Thi includes 334 civilians listed a missing, but presumed to hav been killed. All of the casualty statistic cover the period since, the emer gency proclamation of June 1, 1948 under which British troops Joined Jocal police authorities in battling the Communist terrorists. .Chinese Slain Victims , Chinese make up most of th 'terrorists killed. They numbe 1,357. Malays, Indians, Indo nesians, Siamese and Sakai com prise the rest of the list. Terror ists have killed a total of 1,14' civilians and 4S2 regular, specia and auxiliary police. .. The last report . on militarj casualties--up to July 1--showed the British army lost 113 men, in eluding Indian Gurkhe soldiers. / total of 188 was founded. Losse in the RAF were 27 'killed and on' wounded. The royal navy listed one wounded. Some British authorities are hopeful that during 1951 it wil be possible to withdraw the 17,000 British troops from Malaya, with this idea in mind, special com panies of police are being or ganized on a semi-military basis to take over the jungle warfare. Britain is sending jet planes to Malaya to aid in the air strikes against Communist terroris "breeding places" in the dense Jungle. British Claim Progress British authorities claim much progress has been made in the last 28 months in wiping out terrorist bands, but it seems they still have a long way to go, for every day brings news of shootings, lootings, ·train derailments and sabotage. Lt. Gen. Sir Harold Briggs, commanding the British army operations against the. Communists, told a news-conference he thought the "hard core" strength of the full- time and part-time terrorists .ran between 3,000 and 5,000. He compared the terrorists to a ·plague of mosquitoes and said the British troops and federation security forces were swatting the ' communists as fast as they could The emergency campaign is cost lug $300,000 per day. '·' View Suspects In, Thefts Here ' Cecil Callender. 37, of 3038 N. 'Mountain ave., today was being questioned at the sheriffs office about a series of local thefts and viewed by persons who had reported burglary losses. Callender was arrested early yesterday after a burglary at the Vance tavern, 2507 N. First ave. Deputy Bert Arce said CalJendei admitted taking in his truck _ a load of beer, wine and soft drm*s from the tavern and.that other articles reported stolen had been found at his. home. . Among, the recovered articles which Aroe.said Callender admitted taking, were office machines from the Canyon Real Estate Co. office, 2749 E. FL Lowell rd. Included in the realty office loot were an adding machine, radio, two typewriters, gas heater, mimeograph and office lamp. . Also recovered were a portable gasoline compressor worth 5300, three power saws and five new doors. In all, Arce said, Callender is being questioned about 10 thefts. 'Affidavit Says Million % In Jewels Smuggled In LOS ANGELES, Nov. 3. (F--An affidavit charging that more than 51,000,000 worth of jewels were smuggled out of Europe to-be added to the collection of Lady Elsie de Wolfe Mendl, international society figure, has been filed in superior court. . Lady Mendi died last July 12 at the age of 92 at her Versailles (France) chateau. She also maintained a home at Beverly Hills, Calif. The smuggling charges were contained in an affidavit filed jester- day in support of.; a petition for County Public Administrator Ben H. Brown to take charge of Lady Mendl's property pending outcome of a contest of the will. · Superior Judge J. F. Moroney agreed to appoint -Brown. Edgar S. de Wolfe, a brother,' and Jacques de Wolfe, a nephew, who . were disinherited, are contesting the will. Lady Mendl's estate, is reported to be worth 52,500,000. San Quentin . Gets 'Good Order' Fund SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 3. (U.pj--The state public works board allocated today 549,000 to "preserve good order" at San Quentin prison. Richard A. McGee, director of the department of corrections, had said the money was needed to partition the mess hall and prevent "one screwball «ho blows his top" from starting a riot. The department was allocated an additional- $541,410 to make up cost increases at'the new women's prison at Corona: The'low bid on the project was $4,321,410 but only $3,780,000 had been approved. The board also allocated S275,- 000 to get started a new medical facility .at Vacaville.
