TODAV'S PROBLEM: What can be done to improve the outside appearance of an im- ciisliiifjiiisfied home io give it some individual arcliifecdiro! character? ARCHITECT HERMAN If. * YORK of Jamaica, N.Y., answers: One of the exterior elements a good architect concentrates on is the entrance. A great deal of ingenuity and beauty elsewhere in a home design can go to waste if the entrance itself is left uninteresting. Conversely, a lack of distinction elsewhere can be overcome to a degree with a warm, impressive entranceway. Shown in the i l l u s t r a t i o n are four different designs which can be achieved with varying degrees of effort from a plain undecorated front entrance. Ideally, an entrance should include some protection from the weather. Two of the four designs provide a projecting roof. To make such a root structurally sound, it must be firmly anchored to the house studs. The other two designs require no disturbance of original siding. The desired effect is achieved with simple framing and stock mouldings.
