^THURSDAY EVENING. MAY 2, 176, Stocks Close Up; Trade Moderate T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N PAGE 31 NEW YORK -- UP) -- The stock market closed higher today wllh selective gains by blue chips. Trading was moderate. After a mixed opening the list gradually edged to Uie upside, reached a peak in the afternoon and held on. The market continued to show preference for high quality issues, with Du Pont and Sears Roebuck up a point or better. IBM ran up about 4 and Xerox around 3. Cudahy Packing lost a fraction following news of plant layoffs. Some of the savings-and- loan holding company issues rebounded from recent losses, showed a rise of about a point. Financial Federation clipped a gain of about 2. The major steels showed slight change. Carpenter Steel spurted more than 2 on news of a stock dividend, then erased much of the advance. Monte Vista St. Fleeing the blaze were Howard B. Clark, 31, his wife Barbara, 25, and their four children, Terry, 7; Randy, 4; Cindy, 15 months, and Michael Anthony, 2 months. The fire was discovered by Clark's brother, Donald, who lives with the family and ar- r i v e d home about 2:30 o'clock. When Donald saw a couch in a rear room burning, he awoke the family. Firemen from Engine Company 2 was dispatched and put out the fire after it had caused an estimated §500 damage to the rear room. Water and smoke did much of the damage. Welfare Money Went For Dope P H O E N I X -- (/P)--Narcotics a g e n t s said today they had arrested 13 persons for usin° f u n d s from state welfare checks to purchase m a r i j u a n a and heroin. Phoenix police Capt. R i c h - ard H a r r i n g t o n said an investigation was launched in February into reports t h a t Phoenix area women were pooling t h e i r w e l f a r e checks to f i n a n c e t r i p s to Mexico to buy dope. The officer said some women had sold beans and other groceries supplied to them by the welfare department to get cash to purchase the narcotics. Officers said h u s b a n d s or men living with the women sold some of the narcotics. Most of those arrested were described as addicts. Undercover agents said they were unsuccessful in getting women to make sales themselves.
