p age D-4-- INDEPENDENT Ll "" B " cl ' Cal11 CALM BEFORE THE STORM i All's Rosy at LBCC; Two Players Added By JIM HANCHETT It may be just the calm before the storm, but everything was looking rosy for the Long Beach City College basketball team as the spring semester got under way this week. The Vikings (a) finished the first round of Metropolitan Conference play with a 7-0 record, (b) led the league by a full game over San Diego, (c) had no eligibility difficulties at the close of the fall term and (d) picked up two needed additions to the squad. The newcomers are Stacy Higgins (6-5), v n was a starter the first semester of 195S-59, and Llewellyn Richie (6-1). a transfer from Ihe University of Pittsburgh. Although neither appears ticketed for a starting berth immediately, both are outstanding rebounders and will give the Vikes some desperately needed board strength. The Norsemen's perfect first-round mark was the best an LBCC team had compiled since 1953. However, things might get worse before they get better. Long Beach travels to San Diego (i : eb. 11) and Bakersfield play Ihe Huskies at East L. A. But LBCC has an advantage by playing the Elans at home. ELA is still the highest scoring team in the conference and is reported adding some key players f r o m Fremont High's L. A. city champs. The LBCC starting five continues its balanced scoring attack. Aron Carmichael is tops at 15.5 for the season and 19.1 in Metro play. Scoring: .. . G p " *»"· (Feb. 26) for crucial second- BO inoma: , J'rn //.ilhorr round games. '·,·: Ortiz, Becerra Favored (Continued From Page D-l) the greatest bouts seen in years. Becerra upset Halimi in hat one with a savage exhibition of punching power that destroyed the French-Algeri- in', who was decked twice. Halimi was brilliant in the ? irst five rounds as he boxed the ears off his Mexican opponent, but after being stung H the sixth heat he elected to stand up to Becerra and punch it out toe-to-toe. This vas a fatal mistake. After some question as to his physical condition early in lis training, Becerra has im pressed onlookers in his final ;parring sessions. He appears much stronger and more con- 'iclent than he was before the first fight. Halimi's backers have been disappointed in his training program. He's looked only so-so and has appeared easy :o hit with right hand shots. 'The second bout may steal the thunder. Torres is on his way to becoming one of Mexico's greatest idols.
