Rail expansion WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government says it will add 2,000 more miles of track at a cost of millions of dollars to the new rail system which consolidates seven financially ailing Northeastern and Midwestern railroads. The U.S. Railway Association said the system, known as ConRail, now will extend 17,000 miles. starting July 1 totaled $95.011 million, which is $15.754 million more than the $79.257 million revised operating budget for this fisca! year. Addition of 308 new em- ployes would increase the city's staff to 3,428. The council, however, recently endorsed a hiring freeze on 135 existing positions that Valdez had imposed in October and gave him authority to cut back the staff even further in 1976-77 if necessary. The city's budget and research department is reviewing the requests now, Valdez said. After his own review, a preliminary city budget for the coming fiscal year will be presented to the council, probably April 5, Valdez said. The largest percentage increases requested were made by the purchasing, operations, and the Community Center. Three departments, planning, city courts and city clerk, asked for less than they received this year. The police and fire departments both asked for increases of about 20 per cent in their VALENTINE I*-, HER ULTRA M LIGHT EMITTING DIODE WATCH, r. 5 FUNCTIONS, ft YELLOW KIX. i;w s m: M49155 LHELZBERGJ budgets.
