4-B THE GALVESTON DAILY NEWS WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 13,1993 Braves confident for Game 6 Associated Press PHILADELPHIA — If anything, the Atlanta Braves are overconfident going into Game 6 of the NL playoffs. And that's no small thing for a team that trails the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2. "We've done it before, so we can do it again," Torn Glavine said Tuesday after throwing for 10 minutes at Atlanta-Fulton Country Stadium. Greg Maddux will pitch Game 6 against the Phillies' Tommy Greene on Wednesday night. If there is a Game 7, Glavine will pitch Thursday night against Terry Mulholland. "Hopefully, well win tomorrow and force that situation," Glavine said before the Braves traveled back to rainy Philadelphia. "If we do, I like my chances." Two years ago, the Braves went back to Pittsburgh trailing 3-2. Steve Avery pitched three-hit ball over eight innings as Atlanta won Game 6 by 1-0, and John Smoltz pitched a six-hit, 4-0 victory the next night. "A lot of people are going to ask, 'How are we going to do it? " Avery said, "but we've done it before." Before Monday, the Braves hadn't lost consecutive games since Aug. 19-20. Atlanta has lost seven consecutive one-run games in the postseason and trails in the series even though it has outscored the Phillies 30-17. Ifs beginning to resemble the 1960 World Series, when Pittsburgh won in seven games even though the New York Yankees outscored the Pirates 55-27. "I don't know much about Uncle Mo," Maddux National League Championship Series Philadelphia toads 3-2 W»dn»«clttv. Pel 13 Adanta (Maddux 1-0) at Philadelphia (Greens 01}, 7:12 p.m. Thuf«d«v. I try not to get caught up too much in what's happened the day before." Since its 14-3 and 94 routs in Games 3 and 4. Atlanta is just 5-for-20 with runners in scoring position. The Braves have scored in just two of their last 20 innings. "Maybe it's time to stop looking at what we haven't done and look at what they have done," Terry Pendleton said. Pendleton is playing with a slight abdominal strain. Mark Lemke's strained right shoulder appeared to hamper his swings in Game 5. Greg Olson received a cortisone shot Monday, a day after he was hit on a wrist by a pitch. It's not clear whether he would be able to catch. With the breaks and bounces going against them, one would think the Braves are bit concerned. But the two-time NL champs look back at their comeback at Pittsburgh two years ago, and their three-run ninth-inning rally against the Pirates in Game 7 last year. "I felt more anxiety in 1991 than I do now," pitching coach Leo Mazzone said. "I don't know if confidence is the right word. Yes, I feel confident. I kind of know more of what to expect. We're going in there and there's going to be a lot Green Bay turns deal for Falcons' Dickerson Phillies catcher Darren Daulton holds the ball In his mitt after tagging out Jeff Blauser during Monday's Philadelphia win. of energy and excitement." Lemke, who missed a game-winning hit by about three feet Monday, typified the attitude. "There is no reason to panic, no reason to look ahead or look back to what's happened," he said. "We need to focus on Game 6." Associated Press ATLANTA — So the Atlanta Falcons didn't want Eric Dickerson after all. The winless Falcons (0-5) on Tuesday shipped the NFL's No. 2 career rusher to Green Bay along with defensive back Bruce Pickens for running back John Stephens and a conditional draft pick. Last week, Dickerson thought he had been cut by the Falcons, his third team in three years. A day later, it turned out Dickerson had not been released, although the 11- year veteran wasn't convinced his services were needed by Atlanta. Dickerson insisted he was told by assistant coaches June Jones and Ollie Wilson he was cut. Coach Jerry Glanville said he simply wanted Dickerson to know that he'd play a backup role. "They can call it a misunderstanding or whatever," Dickerson said. "But I know what was said to me. Still, what's the difference? What they're telling me is that my role here is nothing." "It will give Eric a chance to play, to start," said Falcons president Taylor Smith. "Green Bay was real interested in getting him and for us it was a chance to get a big fullback in Stephens, something we didn't have. It just made sense to do it at this time." "I don't think it is any secret we are having a very difficult time running the football," Packers general manager Ron Wolf said. "We had to do something to juice up our running game. "Eric is very excited and said he just wanted to go someplace where he can play," Wolf said. "He kept saying, 'I know I can play,'" SATELLITE SYSTEMS ^MERCHANT! UENNIS Court paves way for all-female boxing Associated Press blocked when USA Rovi™ «« ,, ma v^j ._j —... . . ,!~ SEATTLE — Backed with a court order, Dallas Malloy and Heather Poyner will step into the ring Oct. 30 for a landmark sanctioned amateur boxing event between two women, Malloy's lawyer said Tuesday. It took the efforts of Malloy, her lawyer, the American Civil Liberties Union and a federal judge to get sanctioning for the bout. "I'm really happy that this day has finally come," Malloy said during a news conference. Tin really excited and I can't wait until Oct 30." The bout at Edmonds Community College north of Seattle will pit Malloy, a 16-year-old high school sophomore from Bellingham against Poyner, 21, of Lynden. Malloy's path to the ring was when USA Boxing, the weekend and voted to establish a body that governs amateur boxing boxing program for women in the United States, refused to The USA Boxing office in Colorado Springs, Colo., was closed late Tuesday afternoon and no one was send her an application because she is female. Without membership in the parent organization, Malloy could not compete in the Pacific Northwest Amateur Boxing Association. Malloy sued and in May, U.S. District Judge Barbara Kothstein of Seattle granted a preliminary injunction allowing Malloy to box, paving the way for the fight. Rothstein held that a USA Boxing bylaw barring female fighters violated Washington state's anti-discrimination laws. A trial is scheduled for Dec. 20, but Malloy's lawyer, Suzanne Thomas, said she had received an unofficial report that the governing body of USA Boxing met last f •——ww»« u_t*.v* *ix* \jii\^ Yr£U immediately reachable for comment.
